Grant Cunningham vs. Mitch Mitchell, 6 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

Round 1

Cunningham is taking small steps inside, putting up a left jab and then covering up. Wide sweeping hooks by Cunningham, feeling out. Mitchell is circling quickly to his left, giving plenty of room, ducking and coming up with long flurries to the arms. Nice counter hook by Cunningham catches Mitchell throwing on the pass-by. Straight jabs by Cunningham finding Mitchell as he orbits. Double hook, right hand by Cunningham, missing the combo but chasing Mitchell to the ropes where Cunningham lands some body shots. Mitchell darts to his left. Jabs to the guard by Mitchell. Cunningham presses forward, slow but steady, working the jab. Mitchell tosses one back and gets picked off. BIG triple hook to the body by Cunningham, folding Mitchell up! He almost goes down, but escapes.

Round 2

Cunningham is kicking his legs sidelong, cutting off Mitchell's lateral movement and forcing him to engage. Mitchell is always first to throw but largely hitting the gloves of Cunningham and then backed up by counter combos, Cunningham favoring hooks to the body. Mitchell is fought to the ropes where Cunningham cuffs in a few temple shots while Mitchell tries to stave him off with the jab. Slapping combos around the side by Mitchell while circling. Cunningham keeps coming, slipping jabs by craning his neck.

Round 3

Cunningham is coming forward throwing pick-axes from either side. Mitchell cedes ground and dances his way off the ropes, fluttering out a jab. Cunningham is baiting Mitchell with a single light jab. Mitchell tries to step around and get a fix on his own jab, and Cunningham surges in with a powerful hook to drive him back. Mitchell circles left and pops jabs up, tripling into Cunningham's guard. Cunningham blocks a double jab and a cross, all while stepping forward. Cunningham waits for Mitchell to finish and then begins to hook and drop missile rights.

Round 4

Cunningham is pressing ahead and really starting to rip up the body now. Mitchell jabs and steps around him, but Cunningham is leaping in with left uppers to the gut and then squaring up to jab Mitchell in the face when his arms drop. Cunningham is beginning to impose himself and wear Mitchell down. Cunningham still pauses between offensive bursts to get up a turtle shell and collect Mitchell jabs. Big hooks downstairs by Cunningham sliding inside. Mitchell is caught hard on the ropes and doubled over, but the ref splits them with Cunningham leaned atop him.

Round 5

Cunningham is pinning his forearms together and catching the desperate straight pecking double-taps of Mitchell. Big hook by Cunningham with a step forward. Mitchell is driven off, and tossing long jabs to deter Cunningham with little success. Cunningham keeps marching in and scoring with head-snapping jabs before Mitchell can get away. Mitchell is trying to utilize the entire breadth of the canvas. Combos whipped out by Mitchell in a last-ditch effort to slow Cunningham down. Combo to the face by Cunningham, finishing with a hook to the body when Mitchell swoops down looking for a grab. More punishing body shots by Cunningham, concluding with a thunder-crack right to the flank that drops Mitchell. He quickly beats the count, but is in obvious pain. Cunningham moves in and shoeshines. Mitchell covers up. Mitchell moves away from the ropes and flurries. Brave stand made by Mitchell, throwing quick but gormless uppercuts.

Round 6

Cunningham is approaching with pillars up for the first half minute, letting Mitchell slap and prod away with jabs and uppercuts. Mitchell works fervently but doesn't score much cleanly. Mitchell gets moving as Cunningham starts to wake up offensively, measuring his high left hook. Mitchell sticks the jab and drops a level, going left. Cunningham scrapes him with a body shot. Mitchell dances around and floats his jab. Cunningham closes off a route and charges in with a left hook to the body. Mitchell is held up by the ropes. No KD ruled as Cunningham keeps banging. Mitchell gets free, pumping his jab. Cunningham is perhaps punched out. Mitchell whips in right hands around the guard and keeps jabbing to set them up. Cunningham loads up, big left hook to the belt line, reaching as Mitchell draws himself in tight.
