Frankie Gomez lands a punch on Jose Benavidez at the 2009 US National Finals

It's fight night folks! It's been 6 years since these two last fought at the US amateur championships, and Gomez picked up the title by beating Benavidez on points, starting the biggest US boxing rivalry in a dozen years. Ever since they turned pro in 2010, Benavidez under Top Rank, Gomez under Golden Boy, this potential clash has been part of passionate discussions, and after long years of building, waiting, press rivalry and fan demand, Todd deBouf and Richard Schaefer finally made boxing's superbowl, staging the megafight at the recently opened Los Angeles Stadium.

The crowd of 90.000 is absolutely electric. Gomez from East LA gets a huge cheer as he's being introduced by Michael Buffer: 2-division champion, undefeated, and represents the same city as his boss who stands right next to him. But the crowd is chanting Jo-se! Jo-se! just a minute later as Benavidez' achievements are being read: unbeaten two-time champion, trained by Freddie Roach, now lives in Los Angeles as well. HBO's PPV lines are ringing, boxing servers are overloaded, and heart rates are going crazy: LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEEEEE!!!!!

    What's your pick?

Never happen...They'll be beaten a handful of times before then. Everyone keeps saying that they are future stars. But these guys are 18 years old fighting at 140lbs already. As they mature and gain "Natural Weight"...within 5 years they'll be full blown 147lbs-154lbs, maybe even bigger fighters. Maybe if they were 119lbs-126lbs fighters, they may become stars. But at 147-154lbs and beyond...there are too many YOUNG, TALENTED, GIFTED fighters who are just 18-23 years NOW...that will still be a force in the sport 5 years from now.

I've been more impressed with Gomez so far if that's any indication. Obviously 5 years down the line there's no way of telling.

LA Stadium won't get built in City of Industry. AEG will build an NFL stadium in downtown LA. Then hopefully, the Rams come back home to LA in 2015.
