Interesting....if Cooney starts fast he could certainly put Frazier down, then on in it gets interesting, I'd think Frazier to come out on top in a war but Im not completely sure, think Cooney gets underrated, he could seriously bang, good speed and f*cking huge into the bargain.

I think Frazier takes it but he takes his lumps in the early rounds.

That was my initial thoughts. Frazier wins it, but not without suffering a beating in the early going.

Incidentally (and not meaning to hijack the thread), just as a reminder, in less than 24 hours...

I think this would be a close match in the early going. Joe doesn't have a victory over anyone with the size and power of cooney. I think it all depends on how he can deal with Cooney early. I would favor Joe in this, but I think there's a good chance that a motivated Cooney with the size advantage, and his big reach advantage could get a TKO over Frazier.

Joe Frazier of 71 vs 1981 Cooney. these two would be trading left hooks until one of them fell first and that would be Frazier. I do not believe Joe would do well trading with a man this size. How effective would he be punching up at a man that stands 6-5?
Joe is not going to weather the storm and bows out by round 6

With this post, you may have surpassed FrankenFrank you idiot. How are you so sure that Frazier would quit against Cooney? Frazier is more durable than Cooney and holds just about every advantage over him. Cooney's power is not all that is cracked up to be anyway. Has he KO'd any fighter worth noting? No Norton, Lyle and Young, they were old and past it. Size would be no issue against Cooney as Frazier's style was suited to fight taller men.

    Frazier TKO 5

Aside from the part about Frazier "bowing out," I don't think this is out of the question. Frazier never fought a man who combined the power and size of Cooney. Foreman was obviously a much better fighter, but he was also smaller than Cooney. When you look at the large difference in reach and size between the two, picking Cooney over Frazier is understandable.

    1.) Size means nothing

2.) Cooney's power is overrated. Who has he KO'd of note?

3.) Frazier's style was suited to fight bigger men

4.) The gulf in class is enormous in favor of Frazier

    That's clearly not true.

Ken Norton, and Cooney's victories show a nearly 80% knockout ratio. He was always thought of as a big puncher.

How many quality big men did he beat ?

Frazier's the more skilled fighter, but that doesn't mean he could overcome the size, height, and reach advantage of Cooney.

If Frazier gets inside he wins in 8.

If he doesn't, then Cooney has the big hook and vicious uppercut to TKO Joe in 5.

(see Norton sitting in a corner with a glazed look in his eyes.)
