I can see why someone might find the fight a bit one sided if he tuned in past the 7th round. But overall it was a terrific fight, Ali just couldn't bring himself to keep that damn right hand up, but I think Joe would have won regardless.
No way. Very competitive fight. Ali put a bunch of rounds in the bag early and arguably edged out a bunch over the middle and end of the fight.
I think the only thing that sticks in my craw about that fight is how Ali just couldn't seem to learn his lesson and keep his right hand up. He just kept getting bombed and bombed, and refused to do that one, simple thing. I don't think he would have won, anyway, but still....that always bugged me.
Really? I've scored it two times, both cards being 143-141 Frazier. Everyone scores differently. For me Ali was hitting Frazier so much in between Fraziers punches.
Ali fought more rounds than Frazier in 1970. Who was rusty? They were both sharp, crisp and fast. The scoring was pretty much on point. One thing that may get lost with modern judging is that back in those days aggressiveness really counted in the scoring. The man who was making the fight was Frazier. The other thing is the effect of the punches. Ali landed a great deal but was hard-pressed to back Frazier up. It seem every time Joe clipped Ali he flopped around like a fish, stopped punching and held for awhile. You'll hear Don Dunphy repeatedly say Ali is making the clinches. Another factor in the old pro style of judging. In those days people left their house to go to fights. They wanted to see a fight.
Ali had fought 18rds in the previous 4 years! lol If you can't objectively factor that in ,then------
How one trains is how one fights..... After years of training, sparring, and fighting with bad technique , in that moment when he is tired and fighting on adrenaline and instinct whatever habits good or bad a fighter has will become more of an issue . In Ali's case he dropped his right hand. It's the main reason he was very susceptible to the left hook. Frazier ,Banks and Cooper dropped him with the left hook. But no boxer is perfect, Ali had a decent career don't you think.
It depends how you score a fight. Do you score old school or new school. Old school judges and old school cards reward the fighter who is doing the ass kicking. Some flashy footwork and slick head movement might impress the new wave, but I'm old fashioned with my boxing scoring. Simple question. Who was doing the ass kicking? Frazier or Ali?
Ali was in the early rounds, Frazier started in the middle and through the majority of the last five rounds really kicked his ass imo. Ali looked defeated well before he was knocked down. Of course, Flash...he was the greatest for sure.
Simple answer: Both men obviously did plenty of ass kicking. How did you score the first five rounds of the fight?
Agreed. Frazier whupped Ali, Ali wasn't landing that many, close to an ass kicking etc etc etc On other days - Frazier was past it by the time he fought Foreman, he never recovered from the Ali fight, he took a lot of punishment etc etc etc
I think there were enough punches thrown between them for both to be true. Though, it depends on what we mean by an ass kicking, to be fair. Either way - Ali weathered the storm better than Frazier, I guess. He went on to prove just how apt he was for taking punishment.
