Only the referee scored the fight, and he gave the fight to Frazier, 59¼-58½, that means 7-5 in rounds (Joe also knocked Bugner down in 9th).

I watched the fight closely and can't give Bugner more than 1 round, Joe simply dominated him and was too agressive, threw 50+ or 60+ punches in every round.

Where did the referee find so many rounds for Bugner? Or they were trying to rob Frazier?

    Good question.
It is worth noting that referees are seldom involved in the scoring this days. It is quite likely that it is difficult to referee and score a fight simultaneously.
However, in the case of that one, it really should not have been too hard for the ref, as it was not close.

George Foreman is quoted as saying he thought Bugner won.

I remember giving one round to Bugner for turning up on the night.

It was probably one of those where despite Frazier winning most of the rounds, every round was hard fought.
It certainly wasn't a one sided victory for Frazier it was a good fight, and possibly Bugners best performance.

"British referee Harry Gibbs, the only official, scored it 59¼ points for Frazier and 58½ for Bugner. Under the British scoring system, the winner of a round receives 5 points and the loser 4¾. "
Harry Gibbs was a top class referee and an honest one.

I think that's a bad idea for referee to score the fights, especially action-packed fight like that. He's concentrated on other things, not who won the round.

And yes, I'd say despite Joe winning most rounds, they weren't thoroughly one-sided, Bugner also was active and threw many punches.

Good points. Last time I scored it I had Frazier winning by three - four points. Bugner came back very strongly after he was knocked down.

I had sympathy for Gibbs after the Bugner-Cooper fight. All he did was score as he saw it and Henry blanked him for years. Unsportsmanlike behaviour from a guy who was normally very fair.

The final score suggests a 6-3-3 scorecard.

Henry was bitter about it for years.
It was one of those that whoever lost was unlucky, whoever won was lucky!

Which round was the only one you gave Bugner? I'm going to try to watch the fight this week.

Yeah, the Britts had a weird system going for some time where the Referee scored rounds 9.5 for the loser and he was the sole judge.

I remember Rosario/Randall I was officiated in such a way, and Gibbs was the guy officiating that one, as well.

    Round 1 to Bugner.

    Rounds 2-10 Frazier won clearly.

Bugner came strong in the 11-12, but Frazier outworked him IMO.

Even with couple close rounds, I don't see how one can give Frazier less than 9 rounds.

Bugner would have been more popular if he had duffed up the Queen mother.Good fighter in a very good era . second only to Lewis in the UK.
