No network covered the fight. If you're in Philly and know some old time boxing fans, you might be able to hunt down a private video copy of the fight.
I'm surprised it was not covered at all. Of course Joe was out of shape and shot from his ring "wars", but it still would be interesting to see.
From what I remember reading about the fight Frazier was overweight and slow and was basically given a draw.
ive only seen a few pics of this fight but pretty much like everyone says frazier looked completely washed up
I remember reading that Joe did land a decent left hook in the fifth but at one point he took about 8 unanswered punches.
heres a paragraph about the fight that i found about it http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,925127-3,00.html Last week in the decrepit Chicago Amphitheater, in the middle of the stockyards, Joe and Floyd ("Jumbo") Cummings fought to a melancholy ten-round draw. Frazier may still shake buildings, but what once would have been lethal lefts did not move Jumbo, a muscle-bound 30-year-old ex-convict, who almost knocked Joe out three different times. Joe's left eye was blackened, his lower lip was frayed, his face was starting to lose definition just like in the old days, and he felt wonderful. "It was worth it to me," he said. "When I got shook, I knew I had to survive. I proved myself. I don't see no reason to stop fighting now." Ali can see no reason either. . . . remembering that the man who fights one more round is never whipped."
Cummings deserved the nod, but in hindsight, a draw was perfect for Frazier. Had Frazier won this fight, he probably catches a beating in his next outing.
I remember Joe saying something about being a bit rusty but was upbeat. Of couse Joe thought he won the fight.
I've never seen a picture of Jumbo Cummings, but I can envision him looking something like Kimbo Slice!
It was what you might expect. An old, thick Frazier fighting a musclebound , slow , limited opponent. Jumbo's previous name fight was the network debut of Renaldo Snipes when Jumbo bit him in a clinch ... I was very glad Joe did not get hurt by a better fighter looking to make a name and that he packed it in ... Jumbo was kind of built like Kimbo minus the facial hair ..
Until he caught him and rocked him badly. It was the first warning signs of the the problems Bruno was going to have when he got hit.
Absolutely, but it also foreshadowed the fate that Bruno would succumb to against Bonecrusher and Lewis: look awesome then get tagged with one bunch that ruins everything.
