Let's say that Joe Frazier as we knew him fought Jess Willard on July 4, 1919 and subsequently fought everyone that Dempsey did all the way until Gene Tunney. Could Frazier go undefeated or would he lose to say, the hard punching Firpo?

Assuming Jack Dempsey does not exist in this scenario, I really do not see Luis Firpo, or any of the others, beating him. From Willard to Tunney, I think Joe Frazier would have gone undefeated. Then I am guessing that Tunney would not have fought him. If, unlike Jack Dempsey, Frazier had fought Harry Wills, that fight might have been his big loss in that time frame.

    yes he goes unbeaten.

Better question is if Frazier grew up in the same circumstances as Dempsey and had lots of pro fights as a teen without adequate preperation and with no film of his opponents to study, could he go unbeaten? Probably not.

But Frazier destroys Willard and everyone else post that.

He beats everyone. Including Tunney. Frazier was better version of Dempsey.

Possibly. I could see him having problems with Willard as he did not possess Dempsey's speed, or side to side head movement. Dempsey hit harder than Frazier as well so it's so clear cut.

We don't know if Dempsey hit harder than Frazier. If you state that as fact you'll get a lot of pushback. Both men hit very hard. That much we know.

When did Frazier drop a 245 lb man? Dempsey dropped big men all the time, no disrespect to Joe but Jack def hit harder.

Dempsey probably did hit harder but I don't think Frazier would struggle much in Demseys era Frazier as a fighter is just on a higher level then someone like Dempsey or anyone else in the era

Frazier was not a level higher than Dempsey. Dempsey paved the way for swarmers like Frazier, and he had superior speed, head movement and power. Joe is one of my all time favs but Dempsey was simply better.

Def was not, Frazier was an upgrade on the foundation Dempsey laid. Dempsey was good for his time but on a technical level Frazier was better. Fought in a better era, beat better fighters etc

Theres lots of problems for Frazier in this era but Willards not one of them. Jack Johnson was up like 25-0 on him in the title fight that elevated him above Fulton, Coffey and co. Frazier would destroy him.

Who did Frazier ever knockdown with his right hand? Who did he ever ko for a ten count with his left hook. The idea that Frazier was superior to Dempsey is complete hogwash. Dempsey was extremely quick of both hands and feet and he could ko anyone with either fist. His ability to slip, parry, Bob and weave and block were off the charts. He was also a combination puncher with BOTH HANDS akin to Louis. Dempsey is erroneously compared to Marciano and Frazier. He was actually more like Louis. He could box. He could punch.

Totally agree, Dempsey was one of a kind. He had power in both hands unlike Joe who had the left hook, but barely anything in his right to the head though he had a great right to the body. Dempsey's left hook was better though. And he had the intangibles Frazier lacked.
