There I said it. Someone had to. A ****ing 5 foot 11 guy who today would be a cruiser dominating Lewis, Tyson and Vitali? No way. Foreman put him on his ass! And Ali wasn't a power puncher. Styles make fights, it's a common statement but seems to be ignored when looking at Ali like he gets a free pass because of racial problems the government gave him. Cus D'Amato. Mike Tyson's father and trainer told Ali back in the day a bob and weave pressure fighter would trouble him and this was before Frazier fought Ali and it turned out cus was right. Ali was good but he is overated. Frazier meanwhile is overated to the nth degree because he gave Ali trouble!! I said it. I feel better now. Someone had to tell it like it is.
At this point you just have to micro glance at the thread title. All this pot stirring is leading to heavy overcooking. Too many dummy accounts with 432 posts and 721 posts. The tightness of the policies around here makes this a bad joke. This would be much funnier if they could make it look like actual ******s were posting this crap. The resident ******s fall for it regardless tho. Christ. Keep it up boys. Why not... Yeah.
I'm serious. Poster on this website tend to focus more on 'popular' names and historical, romantic viewpoints then use their eyes and their brains to objectively compare fighters and styles.
Frazier was a bobbing, weaving swarmer, but he is overrated. He was nowhere near as good as other swarmers like Dempsey, Marciano and Tyson. In this video, Ali himself agrees and admits that Marciano was better than Joe Frazier. At the end, he even says that Marciano probably would have beaten him. Ali is much more realistic than his nuthuggers on ESB. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDaw2QFC1Qg[/ame]
Ali gives deference to a former champ. Its respect. Any man with eyes and some film can see 67 Ali would have utterly shredded Marciano. Also, Frazier was a great heavyweight. Fought great, beat good fighters. Is he top 5? No. I don't even have him top 10. But top 15, imo, is inarguable. And that is greatness. You hate.
Thank you. Finally someone is objective!! I do personally think Ali would have beaten Marciano but it would have been hell and more so because of the size advantage than anything else & Ali himself said in this vid his arms hurt where an old Marciano was wailing on him - One of Marciano's tricks was to hit the arms till the enemy couldn't defend himself - and that was just a show fight. Even in the vid Ali is being objective and admitted a bob and weave brawler would give him trouble. he didn't say loose but he said it would give him trouble and that This content is protected . The problem is ESB posters generally don't use their imagination to assess styles :-( The older fighters are always considered better even though that flies in the face of logic where baseball, football, soccer, swimming, sprinting etc all become better over the years but in boixing it is the other way around. Thanks for that post Beatle! :good
I think a Marciano-Ali fight would probably go to Marciano by decision, but I would never bet on it because it's too close to call. However, Ali himself clearly says at the very end of the previous video "He may have won, he probably would have, it's up to the imagination." Anyway, here's another brief clip of Ali explaining why Marciano would have given him a hard time: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXxTv7k_5RY&NR=1[/ame]
60 year old Jersey Joe Walcott took Marciano to the brink(not to mention Lastarza) and you think Marciano who was even smaller then Frazier takes down Ali or Frazier? Ali is like Bernard Hopkins when it comes to legends he gives respect where its due. Ali would be a massive favorite going into the fight so would Frazier.
Styles make fights, true but Ali fought against and beat guys with every conceivable style even though some gave him trouble. He did this over a time period from the early sixties until 1980,and you say he's overrated? Also if you're trying to make a case for Tyson being the ultimate "bob and weave" pressure fighter who would beat Ali then you obviously haven't watched much of Tyson. On the inside and for applying constant pressure Frazier was far superior to Tyson who was very average on the inside Ali would have tied him in knots in there. All of Tysons best work was from mid range even though he was a short armed fighter.
