Why is smokin Joe so underrated, he won the fight of the century and lost a hard return fight with Ali, the third was a great fight but both fighters were past their prime, and his only other losses were against Foreman whose unorthodox style and power he could not cope with. The point that Frazier's critics don't make is that apart from Foreman Frazer would defeat every opponent Ali faced and did defeat all that they have in common. There is a school of thought that Joe would get blasted out by any big puncher he faced but this is not true Frazier was hard to hit flush and could take a punch extremely well, when the names Liston and Shavers are raised Frazier defeats both KOing Shavers in six rounds, both are orthodox fighters and Frazier is able to cope with their style with his defence and bobbing and weaving and also able to land the left hook. Foreman is a different fighter to Liston and Shavers his unorthodox crude style and amazing strength are a nightmare for Frazer and no version of Frazier would ever defeat him. Frazier should rank just below Ali with Louis, there is just no other man besides Ali and Foreman capable of defeating him.
I'd rate Frazier somewhere between 4 and 8, I think. So, I voted top 6. :good I'd rate Ali at 3 or 4. I'm not sure Frazier would beat Liston.
My heavyweight list sees Frazier come in at 11th. I will put an asterix next to my top 15 names who I feel would beat him prime for prime. Louis * Ali * Marciano * Liston * Dempsey * Johnson Foreman * Lewis Holmes Holyfield * Frazier Tyson * Jeffries Sullivan Schmelling
Frazier is great, no doubt about it. I just can't help but see him as a transitional champ. He has the single most impressive victory of all time IMO. However he got detsroyed twice off foreman and never came back after his first loss. I do question his ability against huge punchers and this also ranks against him. For 4 years he was the best of the bunch, but put him earlier and liston destroys him, put him later and foreman did destroy him. I feel he matches up well against ali, holmes and lewis. The highest I could put him is at number 10 instead of holyfield. My top 9 are a lock and all are greater IMO. As you can see, he was clearly top 10 when he retired, however I feel holmes, lewis and holyfield eclipsed him in achievement.
Only Ali and Foreman defeat Frazier Liston and Louis are even money but Frazier defeats the rest for me and his resume is stronger.
of course the h2h is all hypothetical apart from ali, who we know he matches up well with and foreman, who we know he doesn't. It was tough putting him down at 11th but I just can't put him in that top 9.
I understand people having him around ten, my point is his fights with Ali show him to be his equal and the only other fighter to defeat him was a freak of style and power. Yet Ali is 1 or 2, Frazier is 10 doesn't make sense.
definitely. if there is one thing he proved, he had ali's number. he is the reason why ali is not invincible, the reason people give louis, dempsey, tyson, rocky a chance against ali. Ali is 2 because he really cleaned up a whole host of top 20 atg heavyweights. Frazier is 10/11 because of how badly he lost to foreman and his inability to overcome the defeat, he never achieved anything after losing and didn't dominate for long enough whilst winning. That's me nitpicking though. the point is he's great and h2h he has ali's number. It is fair to say foreman raised questions about his chin.
Depending on my mood for the day, Frazier usually rounds out around 10 thru 12 on my ATG list of heavies.... MR.BILL:hat
Outside the 10 ten. Yes, he beat a post exile Ali clean, but he's 1-4 vs. Ali and Foreman and was stopped 3 times in the series. I think a lot of all time great extending into the top 15-30 could win 1 of 5 between the same versions of Ali and Foreman.
:bbbMy top-10 is as follows: "Ali, Holmes, Johnson, Louis, Lewis, Foreman, V.K., Holy, Tyson & Liston." Dude's like "Frazier, Dempsey and Marciano" can jockey around for position from there on... MR.BILLhat
I try to put him right up there but i cant. H2H though(assuming peak for peak) then Frazier is just about no.1
Joe is probably, well, usually my favorite HW, depending on which day you ask me. I can see him rationally, reasonably, have a case made for him, anywhere from 3-10 or so. I think he's just one of those guys who can be fairly rated in a wide range. That said, I like him about 4-6 and simply cannot see him rated above either of my (and most of our) top 2, Ali and Louis.
