Joe Louis and Mike Tyson threw the left hook faster than the three men on the poll. I didn't include them because they had so much in their arsenal. When people talk about "the greatest left hook in heavyweight boxing" the 3 men on the poll are the ones whose names often pops up. For Frazier and Tua, the left hook is their only knockout shot. It's the one punch they execute to absoulute perfection. I included Dempsey on this list because so many people have said that his left hook was among the best. But unlike Frazier and Tua, Dempsey could knock you out with his right hand as well.
I am a huge Dempsey and Frazier fan and I agree Dempsey did wright the book on the left hook but I believe Smokin Joe wrote the sequel . I would have to go with Frazier.
Agree down to your conclusion, but can't split Frazier & Dempsey. Have always rated Tyson's left hook highly too.
I voted for Joe, simply because he was more consistent with it than the other guys. Tua's definitely carried more power, but Joe was born to hook.
I think the fact Frazier made an ATG career based almost entirely on his hook suggests it was pretty special. Im a fan of Pattersons left hook also. This clip shows Tua had great variety in the way he threw his hook. Short, long, hookercut, leaping, double, triple [YT]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJHNSGCjGeg&feature=fvst[/YT]
I have always loved the triple hook Tua threw against Wilson, Wilson just did not expect that third punch.
After careful consideration, I think I'm gonna vote for Smokin Joe. He could launch that left hook from any position. Sometimes he'd double up with that punch. At first I was really tempted to vote for Tua because of the speed and instant knockout power of his left hook. But Joe is just the more skilled fighter all around, and he could sling those left hooks all night. Anyone notice the way that Joe grunts when he throws his punches? He yelps the same way that Serena Williams does when she uses her racket. He even screams when he's punching the punching bag.
Fraziers is the one most likely to land on you and is the most often used weapon, while Tuas packs more of a wallop but is used less and has the worst delivery system. Dempsey is sort of in the middle of these men in most of these categories.
Jack Dempsey's left hook ,which landed on the 250 pound Jess Willard's jaw was the best left hook, followed by Joe Frazier's left hook that almost kod Ali..As Joe Frazier got older and heavier he lost some zip in his great left hook...Dempsey and Frazier , two left hooking warriors...
Dempsey! That iron mike left hook had more in it then Joe's. Both these two could go up and down an opponent with their left hooks all night.
