Frazier vs Bugner where’s the controversy?
    My scorecard:
    1. | 9 | 10 |
    2. | 10 | 9 |
    3. | 10 | 9 |
    4. | 10 | 9 |
    5. | 10 | 9 |
    6. | 10 | 9 |
    7. | 10 | 9 |
    8. | 10 | 9 |
    9. | 10 | 9 |
    10. | 10 | 8 |
    11. | 10 | 9 |
    12. | 10 | 9 |

Rounds 11 and 12 were close, but Frazier did enough to win them. It seemed like Frazier eased up on Bugner in the 10th round.

Throughout the fight, Frazier imposed his style on the taller Bugner, closing the distance, landing punches to the head and body, and maintaining his energy, unlike Bugner, whom he eventually floored in the 10th round.

This was a solid victory for Frazier following his loss to Foreman. I don’t understand the 6-3-3 scorecard, and Foreman saying that Bugner won is equally surprising to me.

    How do you score it?

There's 0 controversy it's widely considered a wide points win for Frazier but he had to work hard for the win. You can have a tough competitive fight but still have a very clear winner.

    Joe Frazier vs Joe Bugner

    1 Bugner
    2 Bugner
    3 Frazier
    4 Bugner
    5 Frazier
    6 Even
    7 Frazier
    8 Frazier
    9 Frazier
    10 Frazier 10-8 knockdown
    11 Frazier
    12 Even

    117-112 Frazier

@Pugguy I decided to rewatch this after our last conversation and i have to say this fight was alot more competitive than i remembered. Every round was hard fought and despite Frazier winning majority of the rounds he was pushed hard all the way. Bugner was also able to stun Frazier a few times with right hands especially at the end of the 10th round which was impressive considering Bugner got knocked down pretty heavily in the same round.

All in all a very clear win for Frazier but competitive most of the way, and Frazier had to dig deep to win this in a surprisingly very spirited effort from the normally passive Bugner.

Bugner also boxed Joe's son, Marvis, which makes him one of the few fighters to do that, along with Jersey Joe Walcott and Brian London.

    Joe Frazier vs. Joe Bugner

This and the first fight with Ali is about the 2 best fights I've seen Joe Bugner involved in. Man, a little more fire in his tank and there is no question this guy could have gone further than he did. I scored this - according to the announcer Brent Musburger - on the English scoring of 5 points to the winner of the round and 4 3/4 to the loser.

    Round 1: Bugner
    Round 2: Bugner
    Round 3: Frazier
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: Frazier
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Frazier
    Round 8: Frazier
    Round 9: Frazier
Round 10: Frazier (scores a knockdown)
    Round 11: Frazier
    Round 12: Frazier

    Total: 59 1/2 - 57 3/4 for Frazier (118-111 for Frazier on the 10 point system) - (actual score by the sole judge: 59 1/4 - 58 1/2 for Frazier)

I scored the 10th round 5 - 4 1/2 for Frazier with the knockdown. But despite the onesidedness in rounds, Bugner really did put up a good fight.

Joe Bugner put up a magnificent battle against Joe Frazier. Some make an issue about Frazier being past his very best but it needs to be understood that 'Smokin' Joe was coming off his first loss and had a point to prove. No doubt about the victor of the fight though - Frazier a convincing winner.

    Shirley, you can’t be serious…….:D

You’re likely joking but it actually is…serious, that is.

Jersey Joe Walcott fought both Phil Johnson (Dad) and Harold Johnson (Son).

Jack London (Dad) and Brian London (Son) both fought Prosper Beck.

    There was no controversy.
Smokin Joe won handily but Bugner made it a hard contest.

Yes, competitive and entertaining. Not easy to put Bugner down, especially the younger version. These days some may underrate Frazier’s power. Upon freezing a still standing Bugner with his mighty left hook, Joe was merciful but might’ve regretted his sparing of Bugner when Bugner himself rocked Joe to his heels shortly thereafter. Great performance put up by Bugner who had the skills and physical equipment but didn’t always have the drive - not to be confused with a lack of courage, Bugner def. had courage.

I still don't understand how Bugner could think he won that fight.

That moment Frazier hesitated to unleash another hook which would have ended the fight was a red flag IMO. I can't see late 60s Frazier not put Bugner out there.

In the big picture Frazier was still working his way back to what he had been on the rise. His sportsmanship almost cost him later when he walked into Bugner's right.

I meant that Jersey Joe also fought a father and son in Phil and Harold Johnson, beating them both. I was wrong with Brian London. It was actually Belgium's Prosper Beck who fought father and son, namely Brian and Jack London.

I was aware that's what you meant. It seems I was trying to be too clever for my own good....
