That would’ve been quite the victory for Frazier had he followed up and put Bugner out for good.

If Ali was in the same vulnerable position as Bugner, Frazier wouldn’t have been similarly merciful.

Joe B did well here going thr distance with Frazier.
Showed how durable he could be going the distance with him and Ali (twice)

    Hi buddy.
I saw the fight live, and thought Frazier was a clear winner, and don't think there was much dissent of the scoring and ultimate outcome amongst the ringsiders, or in the dailys later the next day, Bugner was a strange one, he had all the tools ( maybe his punching power didn't equate to his size ) stamina, height, reach, physically strong, an abundance of courage, quite a lot really, what he didn't have was ( will refrain from using the usual) for obvious reasons, and it held him back somewhat, when fired up, as with Dunn and Frazier to a degree, he could hurt and drop many fighter, at a stretch he could be compared with Carnera, boxers who were never really in love with the sport, Robinson a case in point, he always flattered to deceive, if only he had the tiniest amount of fire and aggression his stablemate Green had , he might, just might have won a title of sorts alas, have met him on a few occasions, and he is charm personified, the ever so slightly high pitched voice adding to the conundrum, conversely , when sparring he was unusually forceful and aggressive, not in the bully mold ala Conteh, just seemed to get more involved, and seemed to relax more, as opposed to the real thing, when he looked tense and rather tight, talking of enjoying the sparring Frazier seemed to relish it, I went a few times while he was preparing to fight Joe, luckily got to the event early so secured a front row seat, after a long wait Durham led him down the corridor to the ring, and as jogged past the rows of seats, there was audible gasps, men were looking back to their friends and shaking heads, it was like the feeling you have on Xmas morning before mum and dad get up, I wanted to reach out and touch him, albeit he was soaked in sweat, he moved around for a couple of minutes grunting and snorting, like a bull waiting for the matador to make his entrance, after a cursory shake of Paul Sykes hand, the session began, I have seen dozens of fighters spar, from the good to the great, but none like Frazier, he would patiently stalk the hapless Sykes into a corner, then unleash the vaunted almost mythical left hook, I believe Sykes would rather have been set about by a bunch muggers, with baseball bats, for 6 rounds Frazier pounded the poor man's ribs, how Sykes didn't go down is still a mystery, mind you he was a tough guy, came home the first time, and couldn't sleep that night, such was the impression this most courageous of ALL heavyweights left on me, bucket list, forget it.
stay safe Stevie, always look out for your posts, they never disappoint.
    Mike.

    Hi Mike,
Was Frazier sparring the Paul Sykes who was an infamous prisoner and who later had a brief pro career, losing to John Gardner in a British title fight?

Totally agree. Great post by @Mike Cannon - as usual. :) Bugner def. had some oomph when he was inclined to do some real damage.

    Hi Greg.
It most certainly was the same guy, he took his lumps like a man, and fired back, he gave Frazier some torrid moments, on my second visit I was close to the ring when the spar had finished, Sykes took of his head guard to reveal a face full of contusions and bruises, he complained not.
    stay safe buddy, chat soon.
    Mike.
