Off topic. Anyone know how Jerry Quarry didn't go down from that left hook from Frazier in round 4 of their second fight? That was truly amazing.
It looked like he was about to fall. Joe even took a step back to let him drop, but Quarry just hung in there. He had too much heart. And the way that Joe set that left hook up with a jab made it all the better. There's no way Quarry saw that left hook coming. I wish Quarry would have went down, actually. I heard he was basically a vegetable at the end of his life. He took too much punishment from sluggers like Joe Frazier. :verysad
No clue. I wonder the same thing every single time I watch the ura-nage tribute that McGrain posted when the video comes to 1:37 and 1:52. I gotta think that Quarry went to sleep for a second while he was on his feet and came to before he could actually collapse or something.
I think you will find it was Frazier who was ****ed up after that fight:good A week in the hospital and past his best at 29!
Yeah McVey, for serious high blood pressure problems and thickened blood which were starting to effect his vision on top of the cataract surgery that he was putting off since 1969. No heavyweight since Frazier has set a pace with the same speed, drive and ferocity like he did against Ali in the FOTC. Joe set the pace in that fight faster than two middleweights, which NO other heavyweight could have done. Any other heavyweight who tried to set the same pace would have a longer stay in the hospital with more than a couple of prescriptions, especially for blood thinning and kidney complications. Both Ali and Frazier messed each other up pretty good in all THREE fights, with the second the least damaging to both fighters. Certainly Joe paid the price for trying to get on the inside against Ali, the swelling in his face is evident from Ali's punches. However, Ali paid the price as well collapsing after Manilla, especially considering the fact that he considered that fight "the closest thing to death" that he's ever known.
The left hook he landed on Quarry in their second fight is one of the best he ever threw. One of the best left hooks he never actually threw was against Joe Bugner. He could have killed the man if he had wanted to, but thankfully Frazier was a class act and backed away... Would have resembled Ruddock vs Dokes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21AL2I74UaM 09:35 I think Walcott and Charles would be the ideal match-ups for Frazier to look good against.
Thanks to McGrain enjoyed that, and BIGA, cheers havent seen that fight That left hook was a thing of beauty so fast and heavy, full body torque. He may have used mainly left hooks, but he used so many types of them from all ranges BTW Frazier mid-late KOs
Frazier's specialty was hunting down boxer mover types, and taking them out. Not only did Frazier offer relentless pressure, but he was very dynamic and quick with his hands and feet. Essentially Frazier forced no power punching boxers to either run for their life or fight back. I think Frazier would stop Walcott.
You wont agree ,but with more than 18 rds of boxing in nearly 4 years ,Ali beats Frazier in FOTC.imo. Ali didnt have have his stamina or legs back imo.He looked shaky against Bonavena ,and admitted he was blowing against Quarry.Ali was not as good when he came back ,he might have been stronger, once he was back fighting regularly , but he could not sustain his movement or attacks as he had done pre exile.Chuvalo said he noticed a marked decline in his speed and stamina ,in their second fight. Frazier fought the fight of his life in FOTC,against a man who needed more ring work before facing the best man in the world at that time. Even so the fight was very competitve and Frazier was never the same again.Ali handled him reasonably easily in the second fight. Both men were shot in the last one, thats what made it so close. Prime Ali ,who we NEVER saw beats Frazier 3-0 Frazier fought 2 ATG's one 3 times one 2 times, his record is W 1 lost 4.
How, exactly, did Ali look "shaky" in stopping Bonavena, one of the most durable opponents he ever matched? Frazier, Chuvalo, Patterson, Ron Lyle, and 60 odd other men couldn't manage it, Bonavena is labelled "unstoppable" if Ali doesn't stop him, but he was "shaky"? Arguably the best stoppage win of his career outside of Foreman.
