Inspired by Foreman Hook's earlier thread about Lewis and Holmes. Joe Frazier's 5 best v Mike Tyson's.

    Buster Mathis 1968 v Trevor Berbick 1981

Oscar Bonavena 1968 v James 'Bonecrusher' Smith 1987

    Jerry Quarry 1969 v Tony Tucker 1987

    Jimmy Ellis 1970 v Larry Holmes 1988

    Muhammad Ali 1971 v Michael Spinks 1988

    Inspired or stolen?

    The jury is still out.

I would put Pinklon Thomas or Tony Tubbs under Tyson's 5 best scalps. Better than Bonecrusher certainly.

    1) Berbick
    2) Bonavena
    3) Tucker
    4) Ellis
    5) Ali

Pretty interesting...it was really tough to pick Tucker over Quarry but I forced myself to be objective.

Good point, but I used these two as Tyson beat them enroute to unifying the title.

Although Ellis might have upset 1988 Holmes , Tucker might have sopped Quarry and Bonavena might have heard the final bell in a losing attempt vs Smith , but if Ali did it , Smith surely could.

Don't forget that Muhammad Ali stopped Bonavena due to a magnificently timed series of punches. Even Joe Frazier, who hit harder than Smith did, could n't manage that. I reckon that Bonavena would outwork Smith.

Also Bonavena had his fair share of deck visits throught his career and he did not even face George Foreman nor Earnest Shavers

scalps maybe but on the nights Tyson fought them they were nothing. Neither had beat a rated HW since before Tyson turned pro. They both knew they would lose and were there for the money.

Bonecrusher's brutal KO revenge win over witherspoon eclipses both Tubbs and pinklon who also fought witherspoon and made far less impresion much earlier.

If you are only as good as your last fight (an established albeit unwritten rule) then tucker, berbick and smith were actually the best "peak Tyson" ever fought.
