Had fun doing this with Ali and Holmes' title opponents a couple of weeks back. How about these two ?
Each of their challengers facing off as they were at the time.

    Buster Mathis 1968 v Trevor Berbick 1986

    Manuel Ramos 1968 v Bonecrusher Smith 1987

    Oscar Bonavena 1968 v Pinlon Thomas 1987

    Dave Zygliewicz 1969 v Tony Tucker 1987

    Jerry Quarry 1969 v Tyrell Biggs 1987

    Jimmy Ellis 1970 v Larry Holmes 1988

    Bob Foster 1970 v Tony Tubbs 1988

    Muhammad Ali 1971 v Michael Spinks 1988

    Terry Daniels 1972 v Frank Bruno 1989

    Ron Stander 1972 v Carl Williams 1989

    George Foreman 1973 v Buster Douglas 1990

    Muhammad Ali 1975 v Frank Bruno 1996

    Enjoy !

7-5 for Frazier although I think that Thomas and Holmes could have beaten Bonavena and Ellis. Than it would be 5-7.

Mathis looked quite good that night. I think he outboxes Berbick.

Well there's three guys on Frazier's list that had no business near a world title fight.
    Stander,Daniels and Ziggy.
Then take out the overhyped Ramos ,and the unranked Mathis, and it starts to look a bit thinner, imo.

    I agree with bodhi's picks 100%.

(Bonavena beating an '87 Thomas is not a marginal pick for me though, it's solid enough.)

Can't see Bonavena stopping Thomas. Tyson had to land everything but the kitchen sink on him.

I'd probably slightly favor Ellis over Holmes as well.

Very even reins. The thing that separates these two for me is that joe has the ali victory and only lost to true greats. Had tyson not lost to douglas i'd have him above joe for sure. That one defeat is what swings it for me.

    v Buster Douglas 1990 - but a good one

    Muhammad Ali 1975 v Frank Bruno 1996 - who really knows ?

Seems like Tyson fought the clearly more formidable opposition in average.

I watched 2 fights of Pinklon Thomas . How many did you watch ?
And BTW , he was stopped at both of the fights that I watched , but it is beyond reality to think Oscar Bonavena could have stopped him.

Yes. PEAK versions of Thomas and Holmes would have won these fights. The versions quoted here would lose.

I can't believe that you're unsure whether the 1971 and '75 would beat the '88 Spinks and '96 Bruno. Are you certain that your personal feelings about the man are n't influencing things here ?
