Very quiet and humble. A nice guy who never bragged that he was a fighter. One look at him and you just knew not to mess with him. Powerful body even in clothes he looked heavy set and huge. We joked a lot with him because he looked awkward. When he was holding his beer you could see his hand gripping it like it was a toy and his jawline was wide almost cartoon like. Easily the strongest smallest guy I've met. He was just built different and his background in PI was tough. He had a no nonsense approach to fighting.
What was his off season weight do you know how much he cut for a fight? Scariest looking “little” guy I’ve ever seen. Anything interesting you’d be able to share about the guy?
I did hear that before a fight he drank. I don't know how true that was but supposedly he drank like 3-4 beers in the back warming up. Not sure about his off season weight. He did have a team behind him but they didn't appear too professional and he could be called at any time for a fight so he tried not to get too big between fights. Like most pro boxers I met he was a doer and not a talker. Getting into a scrap and throwing down seemed like nothing to him. He wasn't worried about fighting anyone and he had a quiet confidence. He would have done well in weightlifting or wrestling because a body like that is made to work. I did see him train a few times. Punches were very hard, he wasn't the quickest. He had a full time job so fitting in training, family and work meant he wasn't as best prepared as he could be come fight time.
That’s some cool stuff man. Thanks for sharing If you can think of something else to tell don’t be afraid to DM me I’m a sucker for even minor inside info aha
I’ve never seen the heart thing confirmed either... I swear to God if Bert Sugar is responsible for this....
The Drunken Master Emanuel Augustus trained at my gym later in his career. Even though he was well past his glory days his pace and muscle memory when shadow boxing was beyond any professional I had seen to that point. He put a hoodie on and headphones and frantically shadow boxed for 8 rounds. Non stop movement he wasn't rushing things yet was fast and crisp and by the end he was drenched with sweat and that was just his warm up. I asked him afterwards, he acted like it was just a regular thing for him. It was his usual pace.
Yes but how many bantamweights do you know that matched Brown's reach and height? I wasn't looking at ape factor. A guy making 118 with those traits as well as being co-ordinated enough to be an ATG boxer is pretty freak by my standards. Hearns was semi similar at welter with less durability but way more power.
"Nat Fleischer vs Bert Sugar in a celebrity deathmatch" should be added to one of the dream cards on McGrain's thread.
Thanks Entaowed i think we were not quite on the same page. Easy done. Maybe i should have explained further.
Hearns's physique was like cheat mode. It was like every spare ounce not useful for boxing had been carved off, and traded for height and reach.
