I agree with Langford but I was talking about heavyweight champions before him.

Among heavyweight champions, I don't think anyone had quite the style that Dempsey brought to the table.

No I agree that Dempsey would have kept his gloves up with modern gloves. Still, I think Tyson was just a bit more refined. But Tyson learned from Dempsey.

 

Then Bob Fitzsimmons was also comparably refined puncher, although with much different style.

 

Yeah, reading the pre-fight reports, either it's nonsense, since with somuch at stake, they obviously weren't about to take it soft, or Fulton is one of the most guilable people to ever live.

 

Being a loveable old codger doesn't give you immunity from following a logical argument. Burt had a penchant for not addressing the issues at hand and immediately going on the defense of his heros. I had interactions with him, both on and off the board, that ranged from amiable to truly concerned. But the topic of Dempsey enraged him and caused all logic to be thrown out the window.
