Norwood was a fantastic, if somewhat undersized P4P talent (In my opinion) One of the most skilled lower weight operators of the past 25 years or so, though his career was plagued by all sorts of issues (That I'd actually love to hear more about from fans who were around for his career.) Legal issues sidetracked his reign, and the mother of all low blows (in response to a boatload of low blows he threw and connected with against Gainer) ended it. But when he was on, he was really, really good.
Freddie erratic behavior outside the ring led to multiple problems. Lost his weight on the scales and then lost to Derrick Gainer. Was like Don Curry had so much promise and was never the same after losing the title. Footnote. Very dirty foul festered fight and horrid referee display.
Yeah, his career definitely had it's high and low points and I try not to emphasize too much on the latter. I mean, people manage to talk about Evander Holyfield without the negative association of the "bite fight", his PED use or head butts. I was always impressed with Norwood's willingness to fight almost anywhere. Check out his record and all the continents he fought on. You have to really wonder what kind of legal issues managed to completely sidetrack a career that was at one time active & destructively good.
