Freddie Roach, Toneys ex-trainer, recently said that an in-shape Toney had the potential to be the best fighter ever
Same Freddie Roach who said James Toney would knock out Lennox Lewis and Both the Klitschko brothers at heavyweight?
I just watched Jirov-Toney again last night and yes, Roach is right, Toney could´ve been the best fighter ever. In the ring he´s looking, as if boxing was made for him.
So in all his career he was never in shape? As for KO'ing Lewis n the Klitschkos - What heavyweights did he KO?
Any1 know who taught him the basics & defense? I hope he & Roach reunite as trainer & fighter someday.
Best ever i dont know but he could be so much more if he didnt wasted so much time on all you can eat buffets. Still a hell of a fighter and one of my fav ever.
An in shape Toney still loses to an in shape Roy Jones ten out of ten. I don't hink it was being out shape that made him lose to B - level fighter in Drake Thadzi, who was smoked by Dariusz Michalchzewski. One of the best ever, yes. The best ever, clearly no.
Being out of shape, not focused and not motivated at all made him lose to Drake Thadzi. He just didn't take that fight and Thadzi serious at all. There's a story that Toney started his training camp two days before the weigh in, and that he overate himself at the hotel the day before the fight. Don't know if it's true.. But I agree that a prime Roy Jones beats him regardless. Styles make fights. But that doesn't mean that Roy Jones would be a better fighter overall than Toney (if Toney had reached his full potential that is).
Well, best fighter ever is exaggerated, but a top 10 ATG is possible. Toney was made for boxing, the most naturally gifted fighter from MW upwards during the last 20 years for sure (Pernell Whitaker tops him P4P), but he never fulfilled his potential. Despite his great career, he's a huge underachiever.
Toney fullfilled his potential, over achieved with anything with fortunate wins of Nunn and others. Beat Ruiz thanks to steroids, which people still give him credit for.
Roach dribbles a lot of ****. Roach: pros: great trainer picks fights well when he has not attachment to either fighter cons: dribbles a lot of pure crap has clear emotional issues with fighters he has been involved with - either hates them stupidly or loves them stupidly and his judgment is **** about them
