several inaccuracies here- collins was not british and accordingly shouldn't be considered amongst "our best guys". never understood how british fight fans felt they could claim him. he spent most of his career based in boston and moved his traning camp to los angeles with his biggest fights towards the end of his career taking place in ireland. he very rarely fought in britian and wasn't eligible to fight for british or commonwealth titles. furthermore he never claimed to be british. he only moved to britian after his marraige broke up after his retirement. regarding steve "admitting it", i don't recall this ever happening but i do recall collins declaring himself the best pound for pound fighter in the world and calling out jones live on sky. i'd accept the arguement that jones prob would have won but collins clearly wanted the fight and jones clearly ducked him
i don't understand this either british fans always feel they can claim irish fighters as british whenever they feel like it, but nobody in ireland would think about claiming a british fighter (unless he has irish parents) as "one of theirs" steve collins would have got murked by rjj at 168 tbh.
Roy by Knockout. Roy carried many men the distance - because he had compassion and didnt want to seriosuly hurt people. He asked - the ref - in both the woefully outclassed Byrant Brannon and Vinny Paz fights - for the ref to stop the fight - and the ref refused - so he then laid them both out on the canvas in brutal fashion. Collins - pissed Roy Jones off - so Roy would have done a real job on him. He would not have carried him - he would have cracked Collins so called granite chin like he did to Sugar Boy Malinga. The gulf in class is clear.
Any successful Irish fighter who fights on Sky Sports automatically becomes British. Collins did indeed want that fight but he would have lost, Jones was just too good back then.
Roach isn't Irish. His roots are Scottish and French Canadian, I can understand why he would want to say he is Irish though.
Like who? Collins was never thought of or claimed as British, you are all getting hard ons over an off the cuff comment. Get over yourselves.
Oh here we go... Where did i say he was British? In the context of Jones fighting any of those guys, Collins can be viewed as "one of ours" whether you like it or not.
even though collins is irish? I dont know why collins is the only dubliner every british boxing fan considers to be one of theirs.
actually, just about every brit ive spoke to says "our best super middles like benn, eubank and collins"
no because hes from a different country, stop with the ****ing nonsense, you cant say "oh great here we go" then say "hes one of ours like it or not" you reap what you sow, dont spout stupid **** and not expect to be repremanded for it, i usually like you posts but your way out of line here.
I'm not claiming him to be British, Just speaking in the context of Roy fighting anyone from this side of the pond. I wouldn't get angry at anyone who put Benn/Eubank/Calzaghe and Collins in together since he fought most of those guys and culturally we're linked (you might disagree with that aswell) lol. I really don't see the big deal here, i seem to have touched a nerve though. I'll take it back if it makes you happy. Roy Jones would've destroyed our best guys Benn/Eubank/Calzaghe, oh and that Irishman Collins as well. :good
Yeah right. I've spoken to a lot more Brits than you and nobody says Collins is British. Nobody at all. He does get lumped in with Benn and Eubank because he fought them, he's part of that scene. It's like your saying everyone claims Duran is American because he's often remembered alongside three Yanks. Why are you posting on the Brit forum if you are so adamant there is no common ground at all between Britain / Ireland? Load of pedantic bull**** I'm afraid.
There's a madness that Jones was that far ahead. He could be made to look ordinary and had been knocked down well before Tarver demolished him. Plus, even small guys like Otis Grant could lay hands on him with pressure and output. Whether Joe wins against the best he'd have faced - hard to tell. I'd pick Jones, but Joe clearly had the style and attitude to get to Roy - certainly in the later rounds. Jones would play keepaway after the seventh when he realises Calzaghe's not going away. I'd have Roy winning by three rounds.
