Freddie roach says James Toney was most talented fighter he ever worked with

Toney could have been so much more which considering what he achieved says a lot about the natural talent he possessed.

 

Toney was a incredible talent shame he didn't have the work ethic to back it up.

 

“My birthday was Monday, now I finally get to go home and enjoy it with some Burger King. Here I come baby! Burger King! Burger King!"

 

I quoted his Burger King outburst because it always makes me smile when I see the clip.

As for his talent, it was undoubted, he was an excellent fighter, a modern day fighter that would have succeeded in any era in my opinion.

 

I know personally that Toney would get one of those checks come back to either Grand Rapids or eastside Detroit and just lay up with hoes and drank and smoke non stop. He would have gave Mike Tyson a run for his money in the 90s. Toney is a legend but he knows he ****ed his best years up hanging with the GDs and talking **** instead of having his business straight.
Manny Steward used to have a club on Gratiot Ave and he would be up in that ***** twisted. Thats why I give Floyd props as far as his boxing career and staying *clean as far as street drugs. Too many fighters fell off out in the streets with these tacky broads.

 

It would take a highly skilled fighter to get the best of Toney in his prime.

He was that damn good.

People forget that Roach was a star trainer already before Pacquiao blew up, and in those days Toney was the shining light of his stable.

 

In fact it took several years for me to stop thinking of him as "Toney's coach (who now happens to also now be Pac-Man's chief 2nd)", long after Lights Out had ceased to be relevant while Manny was all but the biggest name in the sport.

They had a good, symbiotic working relationship. (if slightly dysfunctional)

 

Toney is an a-hole but he's a funny charismatic a-hole with skills that wasn't afraid of anyone. He could have been a PPV star if he had managed his career better.
