You still couldn't understand the concept of risks. Roach knew DLH was not pulling the trigger yet Floyd could only muster a Split-decision against this same DLH. Then a year later he won a wide UD over Forbes. Roach knew he was getting old but so was Pac and he was jumping weight too. His only consolation is the idea that DLH couldn't pull the trigger. That is the risk they took. that's why Roach said he's only risking Pac with DLH but not with younger welterweights like Cotto, mosley or Marg.
Yeah, you are right how ******ed these threads are, Roach even mentioned before that the Oscar fight might be the only 147 fight for Pacquiao, and after that fight they will go down on weight.
You need to go back and read that again. Floyd was bigger than Pac, and is a right handed fighter. Roach noticed Oscar had problems with SMALL FIGHTERS and SOUTHPAWS (Manny was both). Risk? The risk you are referring to is what PEOPLE PERCEIVED the risk to be. It's called pre-fight hype. Roach knew the risk was minimal, because he had the inside track. Hindsight is 20/20, right? :think
And yet Oscar went on to give Floyd a tough fight. Does that mean Calderon>Floyd?.. If Roach was confident in Pac's chances, he was one of the very few in the boxing world. Oscar De La Hoya certainly didn't expect to get beat up, he was even willing to go down to 147. If Calderon beat him up, why would he risk getting embarrassed by Pac infront of millions? Especially as he wanted to fight Hatton after. Anyway, Roach has proven to be a master trainer and shown he is capable of developing perfect gameplans. Pac being able to follow a perfect gameplan is what won him the fight so easily. This revisionist **** is hilarious. Why aren't all you clowns acting like Pac cherry picked DLH ****ing millionaires with the easy money you would've won on the fight?
You pretty much right that people try to revise history, but I think more than anything the cut in weight was another major factor. DLH had not been at the weight for nearly a decade and was struggling at camp. It was the only issue that I had looming in my head when I would talk about the fight with friends. No one except DLH's camp had any idea of how drained he would be coming in, thus no one would predict it, but the cut was too much. Basically the only advantage DLH had was gone. MP was already the P4P fighter in the planet, he was already a lot more skilled, athletic, faster. The only issue was size, which became a non-issue. Revisionist history would be to say it was a mismatch from the beginning which would be wrong to say. It still could have been competitive at a higher weight. In hindsight Roach cherry picked the fight because he knew it was the right time and weight.
They didn't cherry pick anything with this fight. DLH was the one who pursued it. It was he who was accused of cherry picking. Team Pac originally turned it down when Oscar insisted on a 70-30 purse split. The fight was off. That would tell you still they believed it was a risky fight having turned down a career high payday against Oscar. DLH's usual approach to negotiations has always been 'take it or leave it'. It was a risky fight until Pac began whooping DLH with left hands and Oscar had no reply.
OR....maybe they just weren't going to be 'pimped' in the negotiations, as was the custom by Oscar. They walked out on Hatton too, when he dared to ask for 50/50. I doubt if either of these situations had to do with perceived risk (probably more a matter of ego). AGAIN....FREDDIE KNEW Pac was more than capable of exploiting Oscar's weaknesses. And he gambled (and won) that the weight drain would affect Oscar.
calderon's style is closer to floyd than to Pac. Floyd is arguably even more slicker. on the other hand, pac's style if you ask most experts on here at that time, is that of a forward-slugger with fast hands, doesn't know how to fight on the backfoot, unrefined technique etc. No one could quite comprehend how pac could go cute and outslick DLH because that was not his nature. the same way no one could comprehend how a bloated pac could outslug the bigger man. Roach knew more about pac than anyone else but STILL he has to take risks with the fight since pac is untested at 147. 1. Would wear and tear finally catch up to Pac 2. would he carry his speed 3. would he maintain his power 4. would DLH be as old as Roach thinks considering his performance with Floyd and Forbes (both are not just considered slicker but also more powerful than pac considering their weight class) 5. would Nacho beristain who knew the secret to beat Pac find more success with DLH than with marquez 6. in any event, would Pac be able to hold up against a welterweight punch? those are legit risks that should bother even freddie roach. at that time, public opinion says those risks are too much and the fight was a farce, a brutal mismatch wherein pac sold his health and career for a big payday.
what changed? manny improved- and got bigger , stronger and not slower. nobody , NOBODY thought manny would destroy oscar like that, except team pacquiao. people were calling for the fight to be called off and questioned it. rather than accusing manny of ducking- it should be the other way around- that he was able to defy the odds and even his own trainer- by fighting bigger and stronger men over and over.
none of you could imagine that Calderon or Brian Viloria might someday became champs at lightweight and beat a guy like JuanMa Lopez or gamboa. Yet pacquiao went up as high as superwelterweight and there are unknowledgeable scums who faults pac for that. He fought faded fighters? If calderon could run as high as featherweight without feeling the effects of wear and tear and not be faded himself, he'd rank high in my list lol
a yo is dat fool sayin he picked pacqeuio to beat de la hoya :rofl man every1 i know thought pacs toast.
floyds the punk, mofo fought mosley after mosley ducked supa judah, after gettin outboxed by my man ricaro mayorga.
