In the aftermath of one of the best fights of the last past decade there is a lot of speculation as to where the newly defeated [but not finished] Miguel Cotto will look to man his corner. After a couple years of troubled relations between Miguel and his uncle/trainer Evangelista Cotto apparently a new man may be guiding Miguel in his comeback to the top of the welterweight division. Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has expressed interest in the young Puerto Rican star and is prepared to begin working with Cotto for his next bout.

Roach believes he can and will further develop Cotto into a fighter that can not only beat Margarito in a rematch but also the retired Floyd Mayweather Jr. should he opt. to end his “retirement.”

In a recent visit to the Wild Card Gym Roach was quoted saying, “I would love to work with Cotto. He's a great fighter. Even better than what happened to him at the end of Saturday's fight with Margarito. I am planning on calling [Bob] Arum to let him know I'm interested in training him. If Cotto would like me to train him we'll start making preparations for his next fight as soon as he's ready.”

Roach went on to say, “I have fighters that have sparred with him all the up to middleweight. He’s a great young fighter with all the tools. He fast, quick, a technician of the ring and has great power.” He went on to say “He just didn’t make the necessary adjustments and came in with the wrong fight plan against Margarito.”

Roach also stated he would like to train Ricky Hatton for his upcoming bout with IBF light welterweight title holder Paul Malignaggi after the retirement of Hatton’s long time trainer Billy Graham. According to Roach, “Hatton should not have much trouble with Malignaggi if he doesn’t struggle with weight. He [Malignaggi] is a slick fighter but we can put together a fight plan with Ricky’s talent to put Malignaggi away early.”

Roach and Hatton doesnt feel right since a fight between Hatton and Pacquiao is on the horizon.

Roach and Cotto can be interesting, one thing you'll noticed Roach fixed with Pacman ever since the 1st Morales fight, Pacman's ring generalship never allows him to be near the ropes and once he is, he gets back to the center of the ring ASAP. Something I felt Cotto should of done with Margarito.

Freddie's a hell of a trainer. I think he'd be an upgrade for both guys.

Can you post a link to the article in which Roach is quoted in your post? Thanks.

If Roach would have trained Cotto for the Margo fight, I believe that with the right game plan Miguel would have won easily.

If Roach trains Hatton . . . then Pac can kiss his aspiration to fight Hatton.

No one's gonna win 'EASILY' against Margarito!
Unless they knock him out early.
And who's going to be able to do that?

Maybe not.....HAtton would just have to get a new trainer. There is enough money in that fight to make those types of issues go away. However you are right in that Manny might have a problem with Roach chosing to train a guy who he is trying to line a mega fight up with.

Maybe not a bad idea at all. Cotto doesn't need to be tought how to box, he already knows how to, maybe if he can hook up with the right trainer he could beat Margarito.

Either that, or Roach only wants to train Hatton for his next fight to essentially spy for Pacquiao.
