The cracked breastbone of Steele always interested me as to when it actually happened. There is a bullet-point on Boxrec's Steele v Apostoli II page that said it happened in that fight. Although I too think it probably did, I don't know why that bullet-point is there because that is just conjecture. Indeed, Freddie was back in the ring 4 weeks later and then defends his title against Carmen Barth 11 days after that. Truly amazing when one looks at the pampered fighters of today and their length of inactivity between fights. Regardless, the cracked breastbone doesn't get diagnosed until after the Barth fight, which he is now inactive for 4 months waiting for it to heal. He then takes on Solly Krieger - one very bad dude in his own right - and wins but is not the old Freddie Steele. He struggles in the accounts of the fight. Steele himself said he believed the sluggishness in his arms (which is why he got the X-Rays in the first place) happened before the Apostoli fight. Who knows? Prior to that and the death of Dave Miller, he was something and it would have been one helluva fight between he and Monzon.
Steele is one of the old fighters that shouldve been less active towards the end in order to heal up. All those bouts certainly took a toll, though he did turn pro very young.
I had an account sometime ago actually! I've just lurked for a long time just enjoying reading other posters opinions that and the awesome historical content that occasionally surfaces.
Ok i was actually wondering if you'd been about in a different name. I lose track of who is who nowadays mate LOL Good to see you joining in, well done.
Yeah plenty of flaws but we have a good time hahahaha Still a wealth of top insight in here. Hope you enjoy it.
Monzon breaks Steele down with his jab early for an 11th round TKO with his right hand. Monzon too tough, too strong and too rangy.
Good fight, I'm leaning a lot more towards Monzon now than I was in March. Can see an upset but I'm definitely going towards Monzon
