not a bad fighter by the sounds of ,just finished watching adocumentry on him .Wales first world champion ,and a vegitarian! but one thing he seems to have had a lot of exhibtion fights after winning the world title ,but they all seemed to have been classed as NC's .was this well known ploy to just make money ? anyway thought he deserves a thread of his own !
Although sometimes these bouts were arranged by mutual consent of the boxers (usually to protect the champs title), most of those "exhibition" fights were largely forced on boxers by the times, the "NWS" (short for Newspaper) fights were fought at a time when it was illegal in a lot of places in America to render a decision at a end of a fight so if it went to points the newspapers used to say who they thought had won and that TENDED to go down as the 'result'. A lot of the fights that ended in KO around that time were also fought under the same rules but show up in records as KOs because there was never a newspaper decision needed to find a winner. If you look at most boxers most of the NWS fights will have taken place in certain states in America that had made giving decisions illegal. As soon as they fight elsewhere you see the normal "W10" or "W8" points decisions being given a lot more often. So I guess that shows these fights were usually made because of the legal situation rather than being the choice of the fighters.
never new that ,ta for the heads up .I take it they were fixed ina way that is why it was illeagel to give a decision ?maybe ive picked that part up wrong
I have only read about the guy in boxing annuals and bits and pieces writers have noted in passing. He seemed a genuine great fighter. Wonder how he would have coped today?
They wern't fixed, the boxers knew beforehand no decision could be given. The law at the time didn't allow profesional fights in certain states in America, to get around this problem the promoters would arrange fights where no decision was given if it went to points because technically, in law, these were called exhibitions and not fights so they were OK. Although they were technically exhibitions most were in reality "proper" fights where a boxers could win or lose by KO or by a newspaper decision. There was just no 'official decision' given.
