Neither man won a world title but combined for a record of 0-5 in HW World title fights. Oquendo has only been stopped twice in 45 fights. He has 6 decision losses... 2 are split-decisions (James Toney and Oliver McCall), 1 is a majority decision (Ruslan Chagaev), and the other 3 are close as well (Chris Byrd, Evander Holyfield, and Jean Marc Mormeck). In both of his KO losses he fought well, LKOby9 Tua and LKOby10 Ruiz. He had trouble with a very determined Mo Harris but did stop him in the 10th round. He has also beat Duncan Dokiwari (who was undefeated), Phil Jackson, Bert Cooper, Dale Crowe, Ramon Garbey, Clifford Ettiene KO8 (who was undefeated), Obed Sullivan KO11, and David Izon KO3 before outboxing David Tua for 8 rounds and then getting stopped in the 9th round. He also beat Elieser Castillo and Bruce Seldon KO9 among others. In his loss to Ruiz he boxed well, I had the fight even prior to the 10th round stoppage, which I felt was a bit premature. Williams is best known for losing a close decision to Larry Holmes (Holme's 48th win). Williams was 16-0 (12) prior to the Holmes loss and had wins over David Jaco KO1 (Jaco's 1st loss) and James Tillis. After Holmes he beat Jesse Ferguson KO10 (Ferguson's 1st loss) but in his next fight he was dropped 3 times in the 2nd round and stopped by Mike Weaver. Williams rebounded again and beat Bert Cooper KO8 and Trevor Berbick before getting stopped in 93 seconds by Mike Tyson (a bit premature but the ending was near regardless). Williams lost a split-decision to Tim Witherspoon in a fight that really should have been a bigger deal than what it was. He was hot and cold after this. He beat Ossie Ocasio but lost to Jerry Jones. He went to war with Tommy Morrison (he had Morrison down twice and almost out) but got stopped in the 8th round. He would get stopped 3 more times before retiring. So, both men at their best... who wins? :think
Oquendo actually beat Mormeck 98-92, but was simply robbed. He also deserved Wins over shot and fat Toney and McCall. Ruiz KO was bull**** stoppage, but Ruiz would've won on points 7-5 or 8-4 in extra-boring fight full of clinches. Carl Williams was better boxer, and less scared than Fres:yep I'd go with Williams 117-111 or 118-110 in boring fight.
Williams early in his career was actually quite good, Oquendo has never impressed me to much hes a good boxer but nothing at all special. I think a prime Williams beats him pretty clearly likely by decision
Williams was able to step up a bit and win some decent fights. I thought he beat Holmes, frankly. I like Oquendo and feel bad for him. He's like the modern Jimmy Young...always presents problems but ends up not doing enough to impress judges. Williams was tall and rangy and would probably outbox him.
