    "The WBA...the utmost...blackhearted organisation"

    Hello everyone,

I recently interviewed heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo for Boxing News TV.

Fres has been locked in a 6 year battle with the WBA for an opportunity at the Regular Heavyweight Championship which he was contractually entitled to after a rematch clause was inserted into his contract for his fight against Ruslan Chagaev.
A fight in which he did not want participate in, due to issues at home, where his wife and newly born child had severe health issues and he wanted to stay by their side.
The fight, with Chagaev took place in Chechnya, under the invitation of President Ramzan Kadyrov, putting on a 'Wrestlemania-like' spectacle in his country, but without an opponent, the fight was in jeopardy.

Fres, was coaxed eventually, to leave his family's side, after the purse he was due to receive was raised to $500,000, then $1,000,000, and finally, where an agreement was struck, a purse of $1,000,000 and a rematch clause, for the loser to have a rematch take place within 120 days of the first fight.

    6 YEARS LATER..and still counting;

Fres has not received his full purse - he was urged into a dark room at the airport on his way out of Chechnya and was offered a suitcase full of cash (not amounting to the full sum due), which he rejected.

Fres has not had a shot at the WBA Regular Heavyweight Championship, after having taken his fight from the ring to the court room, the American judicial system found in Fres's favour, affirming his right to the contractually obliged rematch but, several fights did not materialise due to a series of unfortunate events.

Fres Oquendo Vs Ruslan Chagaev 2
Fres was injured in camp, Lucas Browne stepped in and consequently knocked out Chagaev

    Fres Oquendo Vs Lucas Browne
A fight with Lucas Browne was ordered, but after having tested positive for steroids, Lucas was stripped of the title.

Fres Oquendo Vs Ruslan Chagaev 2 (again)
The WBA ordered the fight, but Ruslan's team didn't respond, it came to pass that Ruslan retired due to problems with his vision.

    Fres Oquendo Vs Shannon Briggs
In the lead up to the fight, Shannon Briggs fails a random drugs test, putting that fight to bed.

    Fres Oquendo Vs Alexander Ustinov
According to Fres, members of his team conspired against him alongside the WBA wanting to overlook him and the fight wasn't made.

    Fres Oquendo Vs Manuel Charr
The fight was booked, but then cancelled after Manuel Charr tested positive for banned substances after taking a VADA test, this fight and the money involved led to another courtroom battle

Fres Oquendo Vs Manuel Charr (again)
Terms weren't agreed, after Fres doesn't sign the contracts, as above, this led to a courtroom battle and recent ruling.

Fres has been battling with the WBA, promotional companies and former friends/advisors, all of which he states have acted against himself and the interests of justice, blocking him from being crowned the WBA Regular Heavyweight Champion. A recent ruling, has brought Fres one step closer to a resolution, now at the age of 47, might finally see him get his opportunity for the title he has sought for over 6 years.

Fres wants to let boxing fans know of what he believes to be the Injustices that the WBA have caused him and at core, hold them responsible for what has occurred to him in these last 6 years. In the interview it's safe to say he does not hold back on them.

Our interview picks up in 2013 , after his win over Derric Rossy and covers in detail all of the above and much more, including a potential fight with Mike Tyson, the current state of the WBA Heavyweight scene with multiple titles, corruption/incompetence and what Kadyrov was like, in this over 2 hour interview.

Feel free to check out the little teasers in the twitter promo's as to some of the statments Fres makes, I'm sure it will peak your interest.

For me, with a legal background, it was really interesting to hear first hand from a boxer who has looked to exercise their legal, contractual right to a fight, to which it might be fair to perceive that it is not done enough. I do feel for Fres and I believe boxing fans should know and understand what he has been battling against.

There are a few timestamps in the description of the vid, but I could not post them all due to a character limit, I can, if needed, post a full question timestamp if requested.

Hope you all check it out, subscribe, hit the like button and show Fres your support in the comments of the video, I'm sure he'd appreciate it!
    Enjoy,
    Aymz

Thanks for the information! Will see it tonight. It is definitely good to hear what Fres thinks about that. ABC belts are really ****ed up and most likely Oquendo is not the one to blame.

I know it's sort of a joke among boxing fans, but this saga must be tough for Oquendo.

So is Fres retired now then?

He’s approaching 50 and been inactive for six years.

How long will he remain ranked in the top 15 by the WBA?

I just want to say upfront that the World Boxing Association and their various belts in each weight class - Super, Regular and Interim - are a plague on the sport.

That said, regarding Fres Oquendo specifically, how has the World Boxing Association hurt him, exactly?

Honestly, if anything, the organization has been damaged as they've bent over backwards trying to support Fres Oquendo, who was in his 40s and all but retired when this saga began.

    * The WBA granted him a title shot when he didn't deserve one. Fres clearly LOST his fight with Chagaev, which is always left out when this topic is brought up. He did nothing in that fight to warrant a return - other than it was contractually obligated.

    * The WBA honored the contract and granted Fres an immediate rematch, and Fres got injured in training and couldn't fight, which you think would break the original deal, since Fres is the one who pulled out.

    * The WBA agreed to allow Fres to fight the winner of Chagaev and Oquendo's replacement (Lucas Browne - who was juicing). The WBA's testing requirements CAUGHT Browne, otherwise Oquendo would've faced a juicer.

    * The WBA agreed to let Fres fight Chagaev for the vacant belt, but Chagaev decided to retire.

    * The WBA agreed to let Fres fight for the vacant title against Shannon Briggs and, again, the WBA's drug policy caught Briggs juicing. Otherwise, Oquendo would've faced the heavily juiced Briggs.

    * The WBA agreed to let Fres fight the vacant title against Alexander Ustinov and Oquendo's own team told the WBA that Oquendo was retired. So they made Charr-Ustinov. Charr won.

    * The WBA was told by Fres he wasn't retired, so the WBA allowed Oquendo to fight Charr for the belt. Then, because of the WBA's drug policy, Charr was caught juicing. Then Charr threatened to sue the WBA. Then Trevor Bryan wanted a shot at Charr, because this nonsense has been going on forever.

The WBA should've bailed on this guy years ago. Seriously. When Fres pulled out of the rematch with Chagaev, that should've been the end of this. He didn't deserve a title shot to begin with, didn't deserve a rematch, and pulled out of the rematch.

The WBA isn't Fres Oquendo's personal boxing org. They don't represent Fres. His best interests aren't their responsibility. And their policies not only allowed him to fight for a title he didn't deserve to fight for ... but their policies prevented him from facing THREE STEROID ABUSERS who could've caused real physical damage to him.

The only person who screwed over Oquendo was the promoter of his last fight in 2014 who didn't come up with his full purse. Since he can't get anything out of them, he seems to want to take it out on the WBA.

At this point, the fans are lucky there are multiple titles, or this guy would've had the whole division in a standstill in court for the past six years. And he never should've received that title shot that started this to begin with.

His situation is a nightmare and that is far more the fault of the WBA being a mess than of Fres..
but on no realm did he actually ever deserve a rematch with Ruslan:

    https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/ruslan-chagaev-vs-fres-oquendo-rbr.511678/page-12

Chagaev in horrible shape with a lousy performance still 119-109ed Oquendo (yes I know that all three official scorecards were close, but that's very silly. They shouldn't have been; it wasn't even particularly competitive for the first ten rounds). Time for him to retire officially and put some closure on this sage.

This guy last fought 6 years ago, he doesn’t want to fight he wants a pay check which doesn’t have anything to do really with the WBA ,he could have stayed active and forced one , ironically he could have made just as much since 2014 instead of trying to win outside a boxing ring . If this goes to court the judge is going to see how much time passed and think this is a joke .

I'd want paying up front to fight in an s-hole like Chechnya, at least 50% in an escrow account. Should have taken the bag of cash and just had a few more fights then quit.

Oh for sure. Then show up at US customs with a briefcase full of cash as his carry on?

Sir are you carrying in excess of $10,000 USD? You must legally state that if you are. Err, umm yeah I have this briefcase full of cash from Chechnya, that's cool right?
