Following on from the cancellation of the David Barnes vs Barry Morrison British light welterweight title clash we tonight get to see Middlesbrough's Paul Truscott fight for the Commonwealth featherweight belt against tough Ghanaian Osumanu Akaba. The fight looks pretty decent on paper. Truscott is still a prospect at 10-0 with one KO but Akaba has not got much more experience coming in with a 10-3 record. Eight of Akaba's wins have come by KO so he definetly has power. Truscott is a fine boxer with little real whack in his punches prefering to out box his opponents with good mixture and variation while aiming for the body. I have never seen Akaba fight so I do not know his style but being from Ghana he is probably very fit, very heavy handed and a guy who likes to attack, should make the fight interesting. Akaba has only fought two decent guys in Jeffrey Mathebelu 16-1-2 and Malik Jabir 6-3. Akaba won a WBC international belt against Jabir and lost it to Jeffrey. This is the first time Akaba has fought outside Africa and the second outside Ghana. Truscott has some decent domestic based fighters on his record but maybe the most interesting is Ben Odamattey who is another tough Ghanaian and Truscott's best opponent so far. This is a step up for Truscott but one he should come through with a UD unless Akabu scores a surprise KO. Sky are televising the bout. Also on the bill. Chris "High tower" Burton vs Lee Swaby. I really like Burton, he is 6' 5 with good power and decent skill. He has appeared on sky before and always looked good. I can not give Swaby much of a chance but it will be interesting to compare how Burtons performance looks in comparison to David Dolan and Alexander Alexeevs. Swaby usually loses these days and Burton has wins over several decent lower end Brits Matthew Ellis (rtd2), Franklin Egobi 14-1-0 (pts) , Paul Butlin (tko4) , Chris Woollas (tko3) and Dave Ingelby (tko3)are all already on his record. Nigel Wright is set to appear but I do not know who the opponent is. Nathan Brough fights Arek Malek. John Donnely fights Gavin Reid down at super bantam in a good match up. Steve Williams vs Kevin Lilley is also on the bill and Bob Ajisafe.
Shame Morrison v Barnes has been postponed. Lynes was due to fight Branco tonight but that has been put back to the 16th May and will now take place in Italy. Hope Sky show it!
I think Sky have picked up the rights to the Lynes fight. I heard it some where last week but not sure where.
Yep. I think that sky are showing his fight from Italy and then the best of the card from the Mothwell show with Martin Watson.
Nice action here Truscott has very nice skills from what I've seen. This Ghanaian should be a real test for him, they are usually the strong, fit, come forward types so he'll have to work really hard to keep him at bay given his lack of power and the power of his opponent. His footwork and speed will be tested to the max. You've got to think this lack of power will hinder him the further he goes, he really needs to work on it, but it should improve as he fills out Burton has always impressed me. He's a monster of a man, certainly has the physical attributes. Interestingly, Swaby is the guy that handed a rookie Enzo his only loss, but that was probably in his better days...
I am always interested on how guys with little power do. It seems a big requirement if you want to go to the higher levels. I can not name too many guys who a world champs but weak punchers. Looking forward to this fight though. Like I said it looks good on paper. Burton is a good prospect and good go far domestically.
I can see any listings on the tv guide for this. Anybody know what sky channel and what time please???
Sky Sports 1 @ 10.00pm. Might be worth checking out the 'Boxing on British TV' thread at top of brit forum for any other upcoming fights. :good
Thanks elle!! I dont know if it's my crappy virgin media box or what but it reckons the footy is on until midnight! lol Cheers
first round to Akaba, second to truscott. had a sneaky bet on Akaba having seen his record, but truscott looked good in the second round.
tough one to call. think that final round won it for truscott. stuck money on truscott on points halfway through to cover myself.
