Zivic was a boxer and a very good one .He was not a swarmer. The wins he posted over these men prove he was a world class fighter who did'nt fight bums thats what it proves.
Was Pernell a Boxing God who can't be touched?Fritzie gives anyone at 147 problems, period. If Pernell wants to fight dirty,Fritzie could do that too. This is not an easy fight for Pernell.
With a modern day ref Zivic gets shut out. With an old school ref, it becomes more interesting. But let's not forget what a mean **** Pea could be if he wanted to be. Can anyone remember a more flush nut shot in the history of the sport than the one he landed on Chavez's cup? If Zivic wants to play dirty, Whitaker will be right there with him, going tit for tat. As to who wins the fight with a more lenient ref, I think Whitaker is too educated in the art of infighting to let Zivic get the better of him for any long period. Zivic would have some success with his awkwardness and manhandling moves, but is he going to win 8 rounds off Whitaker? I can't see it.
Now this is a well thought out re buttal.Fritzie was in with alot of good Men,he won a few, lost a few.To write Fritzie off would be a mistake,he could box or brawl.147 was his natural weight Pernell was 135-40 at his best. This fight would be interesting to say the least, especially in a smaller ring.Who wins?Thats why I posted the thread.I go with Fritzie simply because he was in with better people IMO,handled middleweights, was a very good boxer, and could get rough if he had to.
Joe, just wondering if you knew how much footage of Zivic is available on film: I know that his fights with Angott and Kid McCoy are out there, is anything else available?
I've only seen parts of fights,Armstrong is one,and I seen that years ago. Most of what I know about Fritzie is from the Book "In this Corner"and from various articles with interviews of Him and of His opponents I've read over the years. From what I gather Fritzie was a smart, solid boxer with a little bit of punch. He took on the cream of late 30s early 40s lightweights, welters and middleweights.Billy Conn,Jake LaMotta,Lew Jenkins,Armstrong,Burley,Bummy Davis.he won a few, lost a few like I said, but he took on all comers.Quite a resume,no?Fritzie was more than just a character who fouled people all the time.Anyone who would take Fritzie lite with any Welter from any era would be making a mistake. He would definately have a chance with Pernell at 147.
Whitaker was undoubtedly a masterboxer, but Welter wasnt his optimum weight,Zivic was not only very dirty ,he was very crafty, never dsqd, despite being a master of the head butt ,laces and heeling ,plus he would hit you low allnight,he might just be too strong inside for Sweet Pea,Whitaker is the class here ,but at Welter? a toss up.
Some people believe no one could beat Pernell; Zivic is a tough fight for anyone at 147lbs which was not Whittaker best weight. When there was thread about a Ray Leonard vs Zivic everyone agreed it would be competitive, but some are convinced that Whittaker would give Zivic a boxing lesson have they ever seen the guy fight. He was not some brainless cheat he was a good boxer and very tricky even Ray Robinson said he knew he was going to make it when he beat Zivic. I think this would be a close fight with Zivic getting the nod when Tito elbowed Pernell he broke his jaw and affected him bad Zivic would be doing that stuff all night.
How did it affect him bad? He arguably won more rounds after the broken jaw (round 6) than before it. Being a crackhead at the time is what affected him bad.
How would he be out boxed? Fritzie was 5in. taller and had a 4in. reach advantage,Whitaker would have to come to Zivic to make the fight.
