One reason why Fritzie don't get his props is because he fought around 200 times and suffered 65 defeats, only 4 by K.O. If your interested do some research on Fritzie.I'm sure your opinion of him will rise.I would recommened a Book called 'In this Corner' by Heller. A great read. You can usually find a copy on E Bay reasonable.Go for it Pea.
This one is a potentially tricky assignment for Whitaker, Zivic has got the reach, power and strength to keep things close enough, he is also very tough. That said, I just can't see him scoring often or meaningfully enough against a slickster as good as Pernell to sway the momentum in his own direction. Whitaker would catch Zivic frequently with counters as Zivic moved in, and in the end his ability to slip punches, fleetness of foot and sublime artistry in boxing from the outside would see him take the decision. Whitaker UD15 Zivic
Out of curiosity, could someone please explain why Zivic had 65 losses? Thats pretty F**cken inconsistent
After losing the Title, Zivic had 37 loses. How he lost the Title to Red Grange, who at best was a Journeyman I don't know.He lost to people he had no business losing to.I had read once that Fritzie would lose for Money.I don't know how true it is.
Speed kills. So does an underrated offensive arsenal with that speed, as Whitaker possessed. Whitaker UD
Keep in mind that Zivic beat Henry Armstrong, and used a smart battle plan and smart tactics in doing it, not just dirty tactics. Beating The Pea is a major task, but Zivic, as long as he wasn't hamstrung by modern day pussified officiating, would be a totally different kettle of fish than the relatively straightforward type of fighters that Whitaker was used to handling.
Fritzie, from what my dad told me was a helluva character. He grew up in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh, a pretty rough neighborhood, though it also produced an Andy Warhol. Go figure. Fritzie was quoted in one of the old papers as saying about himself and what was it, five brothers, "Where we grew up you either fought or hid out in your house. We went out." Seems like you know alot about Fritzie, I'm sure more than I do. So you probably know that alot of people thought he lost the Burley fights. Burley's style didn't do much to excite. But legend has it Fritzie got robbed in the Conn decision, as they were grooming Billy for the big paydays to come.
I have an old Boxing Mag around here somewhere that has a very good article about Fritzie. In it there is a picture of Conn and Zivic all dressed and doing the town. By the look of the picture Conn got the worst in that fight, as both Eyes are Black and his Nose is completely bandaged.
