Firstly well done to Carl it was a great finish in Taylors back yard but without the knockout it would have gone down as a terrible performance. He looked incredibly nervous, stiff as a board, slow with no defence. It looked like he was well out of his depth against another slick American fighter. It was his heart and power that won it for him. If the last round had not have played out like that it would have been comparable to a Woods/Tarver like performance and serious questions marks would have been raised about Carls skill levels. Do you think the occasion got to him or will Carl always have to rely on his iron jaw and strong will to pull him out of the fire. It was the way he couldn't adapt his style to overcome the oppostie fighter. No plan B just suck it up, steamroller and bang. Kessler can bang too ask Calzaghe, he comes on strong and he doesn't fade quite like Taylor. I'm a big fan of Carls but he seemed reluctant to change his output in the ring on saturday. Dawsons talking about moving back to SMW, slick with a lot of heart..... On that performance alone I can't see Froch having a chance against Dawson, Williams, Kessler or Abraham.
Below par most of the way. Awesome world class finish. Dawson had a Taylor-Froch moment when he was outboxing Adamek and hurt and dropped. He can be hurt but he is very difficult to fight being a southpaw. You say "on that performance" but I believe Froch will show better form. He could have Abraham now and can be built into beating Kessler. Let's not forget, Joe and Ricky almost lost their first major US fights.
I don't think it was as bad as Woods v Tarver. More like Woods v Johnson because Woods didn't win his rounds like Johnson did. I had it close but Taylor was looking better. The thing is, Froch has a strong mind where as Woods has shown mental weaknesses before.
Wasn't that bad. Froch at least tried, he just looked like an amateur for 6 rounds. After that he didn't look amazing, but it was attritional stuff and he started scoring points. Woods did nothing. Literally nothing. He looked completely overawed by the whole experience, and got caught between going forwards and back. He stood there like a sitting duck and got peppered by left hands, the only punch Tarver has. Abysmal.
he was terrified. Probably not of Taylor himself, but being in the US for a big fight. Froch, I think I'm right in saying, was renowned for his nerves in the ams. these obviously flared up again, and now that he's tackled them, I wouldn't expect him to fight so poorly for the first half of a fight again. also, it really wasn't woods/tarver bad. froch was nearly always in the fight, and but for the lack of judges willing to score even rounds, i think he was 1-3 pts away from Taylor going into the last. Poor performance for Froch, but hardly terrible.
I think Williams would take the fight if it was offered to him no problem. He'd KO the saturday night Froch .
No way did he. Woods was pathetic that night. Froch may well have been out boxed for a large part of his fight, but he'd occasionaly land or at least throw something with intent. A visible desire was there. You can't "blow it" by losing to Taylor, in the States, in your first ever title defence anyway. You can being an experience fighter, coming off some of your best wins, and losing to that version of Tarver - losing in anyway at all to that version of Tarver, let alone being totally shut out. Woods won one or two rounds at very best - being very kind - and the rest were not even remotely close or debatable. In fact I'm not sure if he won any. Tarver v Woods was one of the worst and most lethargic spectacles of a boxing match I have seen in recent times. The crowd were booing most the fight. Froch v Taylor toward the end was Rocky Balboa stuff!!
Froch was completely overawed also and looked fearful of getting caught at times. If Carl had been outclassed like he had been for much of the fight and then the twelfth hadn't gone the way it had. Carl 'would' have blown his BIG chance to make waves in the states, he would have had no title and he would have lost to a slick fighter but not a great fighter. I meant he could have blown his big chance like Clinton did although in Clintons case it was the last big chance saloon. Not that his performance was as poor:good
Nah, I had it even going into the last, this talk of 'outclassed' is way off the mark He certainly let the occasion get to him early - but he recovered I see what you mean though, he'd have been set back SO much had he lost... But he did what he did so why speculate about the scenario if he hadn't won ?! He HAS made waves. It's a done deed.
I'm a Froch fan as well but he needs to improve drastically. Others fighters won't gas like Taylor did. He's not ready for any of the other SMW world champs at this point. I would recommend hiring a top US trainer and make improving his defence a top priority. McCracken is a good domestic level trainer but has done all he can with Froch. Floyd Mayweather Sr would be a good option, especially as he is spending so much time in the UK these days with Hatton.
I suppose on that showing it makes me wonder how far up the ladder Froch can go. His limited performance shocked me,I think in the Pascal fight he was far more relaxed but his tactics were similar throughout (He had more success with his jab in that fight) Someone like Williams or Dawson would just outwork him over the full twelve rounds. I think Kessler would KO him on that showing, again I hope it was U.S.A debut nerves. Or is Froch a one dimensional, big hearted banger.
