Froch deserves credit for being willing to fight away, even when he has been the defending world champ. Consider that G Johnson (based in America) has fought abroad in World title fights 4 times, 5 if you include a WBU title fight in 11 world title fights (12 if you include the WBU fight) and never fought away as a defending champ, yet Froch has fought away 3 times in 5 World title fights and 2 of those times as defending champ. I read Froch is supposed to fight away again next time also as defending champ in America against G Johnson. In America Johnson is known as the road warrior, and he has fought away less than Joe Calzaghe who people say hid in Wales . Consider also when Froch fought away in Copenhagen to Kessler, his flight was cancelled 3 times, disrupting preparations, and due to the volcanic dust cloud only got to Denmark a few days before the fight, where he then had to do catch up with the reporters thus further damaging his preparations. These are some of the disadvantages that can happen when fighting away Credit should be given to fighters like Froch who are willing to defend away. This isnt a debate thread, just some points for anyone interested
A never use to like froch but a always respected how much of a hard ******* he was ! im really starting to warm to the bloke now though & he isnt scared to fight anyone
Froch doesnt have the greatest skills but he has a great attitude, is willing to fight anyone it seems anywhere and is a great trash talker too, plus his fights are usually pretty exciting, he is definitely a tough man to beat
once again, a fabulous post bailey hopefully you will have educated some of the delusional, ignorant, narrow minded people on esb with your irrefutable facts :deal
Even though I do think Ward would beat him, I cant believe that some people dont think Froch is #1 in the division. How anyone can rate Bute above him is beyond me. I think it's indisputable that Froch is #1.
Sure. Credit due, credit given. But talking about guys not fighting outside of the US means they're fighting at home is hogwash. The continental US is about the same size as Europe (minus the former USSR). You need to look at where the fights were, not just the country where the fights were. The only place where Glen Johnson has a fan base is Miami, and if he was fighting more than a 2 hour drive from there, then he was generally fighting on the road. Not a single one of Johnson's title fights has ever come at home.
You do realise Glen Johnson is Jamaican and not American? And throughout his career always went to his opponents home town/country to fight and consequently has been robbed silly more times than any boxer in the game other than perhaps Emanuel Augustus? EPIC FAIL
Whichever way you(and others) try to spin it, an American fighting in the USA is fighting at home. It doesn't have to be in his hometown and distance is irrelevant.
So if, for instance, if Paul McCloskey fought Ricky Hatton in Manchester, he'd be fighting at home? McCloskey's from Belfast, and they're both in the United Kingdom? Even though that's where Hatton's fan base is, and there's no way for McCloskey's fans to drive to the fight? I'm going to assume you've just never been to the US and conceptually don't understand the way geography works or fan bases develop.
Of course I know he is Jamaican, thats why I put in brackets based in America. I wouldnt have wrote that otherwise. Please dont go silly on the Johnson robberies. Sure he has got some odd decisions in America to fighters like Judah, and a contraversial fight with Dawson, but he was beaten fairly by Hopkins, Ottke, Branco etc. In his first fight with Woods, Johnson was badly hurt in the last round and looked lucky to survive, he won a return away and the third fight could have gone either way. Losing a close decision isnt a robbery, and lets not forget how lucky Johnson looked to many in his first fight with Tarver, on his biggest night. So spare me the robbery tears
Couldnt have said it better. I also disliked him but the man is what boxing is about. No catchweights no ducking. Just fighting.
He's from Northern Ireland - part of the UK, which is the same nation. If you're offended by my example, then substitute Brian Magee and Carl Froch in the example and stick the fight in Nottingham. If Magee had fought Froch in Nottingham, would he have been fighting at home? When they actually did fight in London, did anyone consider Magee to be fighting at home? Which is part of my point. If you're talking about culturally and geographically diverse parts of the same country with zero overlap in fan bases, then it shouldn't matter if fights were in the same country. They're at home if they are where their fan base is. They're not at home if they're not. Period. Like I said, props to Froch for fighting away from home a lot. He doesn't have much of a fan base outside of Nottingham and London, so good for him. But no reason to cut down other people who essentially do the same.
