Im pretty sure that some people need to create some sort of chip on their shoulder or put some sort of obstacle in front of themselves in order for them to succeed.

Its all relative. If people didnt create that they would never be able to succeed they need to use it as motivation its what drives them. Its what makes a millionaire become a billionaire.

 

Carl can improve his defence all he like and other aspects of his game, but at his age he isn't going to beat ward.

I dont think carl is deluded, it's his self belief and I would say + psychology as the motivating factors to be the best.

 

maybe im being a tad bias,i like froch,he is a bit old school,he got beat,no doubt at all,no excuses from me TFFP, but he did ok.
i must admit,i was'nt overly keen on ward,only seen him a few times,but thats the best ive seen him box,great inside work from the punching to tying froch up,he nullified a lot of frochs work.

just not keen on a few on here calling him,he is a warrior who deserves credit,he has got a long way on decent boxing skills and a lot of heart.

Like lamont peterson Froch should have adjusted his style from the 2nd or 3rd round on. They should have realised that trying to jab, box and work inside with ward would play out like it did.. I agree with widdy, he should have thrown the kitchen sink much earlier - Ward was ****ed from the 10th on and yes I did think and wish fights were still 15 rounds cos I think Carl would have got to him cos ward was looking like he didn't want to be in there any more.

Props to ward for sure but i do see weaknesses beyond his excellent boxing ability..

 

Froch isn't as rounded as Peterson. It’s why good fundamentals are so important. Look at someone like Juan Manuel Marquez – he might be at his best as a counter-puncher, but he’s adept at just about everything. He can stand in the pocket, put pressure on, fight on the inside, put combinations together… his one flaw is defensively, but that shows up more as he’s gotten older. His early fights were often exhibitions where his legs kept him out of range.

Froch relies on a few shots – the jab, the straight and a slow uppercut. He needs to be at mid-range to land them with any force. He can’t work on the inside, he doesn’t know how to wrestle into position, he’s not fast enough to live on the outside, and he doesn’t put his punches together well enough to negate a counter-puncher.

He can’t change those things in his mid-30s. He’ll always struggle against movers or guys who’ll step inside his preferred range and outwork him.

 

I could watch Marquez all day.

I struggle to think of a smarter operator than him, especially in the modern era. The way he can feint and set traps is masterful.

 

Were they any more of a disgrace than the 120-108 card Ward had against Bika, or the fact he fought in the states the whole tournament? Not saying the cards weren't a disgrace, but it's maybe about time Ward felt a bit of what he's been benefiting from thus far.
