No one likes paying taxes but some of us have limited sympathy when people complain that they earn enough to hit the supertax bracket.

Have you ever purchased something from a friend (say building materials - easy example) who owns a company and can therefore reclaim the VAT that has been paid?

Instead of paying say £115 for something including VAT, you could get a mate to buy it for you for £100.....

Granted it's not avoiding income tax, which is the point of this thread, but still avoidance of tax of some sort.

I've no problem with Froch ****ing off and not paying tax, thats his choice but I shouldn't have to listen to him bleat about how unfair it all is.

I was being secretly ironic :thumbsup

If Froch wants to get abroad I can send him to work with some of my lads...very good money, tax free, plenty of sunshine...see how big his balls are then.

Seriously, with the way things are with people being laid off left right and centre he should be doing the socially responsible thing by coughing up his dues, and shutting the **** up

    I agree with that!

Everyone has a right to moan about tax - I do.

But moaning about being a 50% tax payer is a bit rich. I wish I earned enough to call myself one, then I would look at ways to get out of paying it.

everything should just be VAT. That way if you spend more money you pay more tax.

Anyone else find it difficult to feel sorry for millionaires with money troubles?

I don't think that would work, it would absolutely decimate any international trade and probably leave us in a far worse situation. One possible way around it would be to cut VAT for exports but I'm sure that would lead to a lot of other problems.

On a different note, this information is from a previous budget report (not much will have changed). Of the average 8680 pound spend by central government on your behalf this year...

1120 pounds will go to the NHS
763 pounds will go to local government (to help towards services such as police and education)
520 pounds will go to regional expenditure on Scotland and Wales
440 pounds will go to education
343 pounds will go to defence
135 pounds will be spent on Northern Ireland
75 pounds will go on international development
and 4200 pounds can't be accurately assigned as it goes on demand lead costs such as social security payments (state pensions - roughly 1000 pounds spend for each of us according to the pensions commission - but also unemployment benefit, disability benefit, etc)

That should give you some idea of the proportions of expenditure. I'm sure there is a lot of slack that can be taken up but I don't think that much lower tax rates are sustainable in this country without a major change in the socio-economic culture.

Very pedantic comment it was too!

The tax system is rubbish. No incentive to try that hard.

    But!!!!!

Carl could put a lot of his purse into a pension pot and get the tax relief on it. As the stock market is low now, and with the 40% tax on top of what he contributes, he could set himself up for later in life. As an athlete he could also probably retire early. (not sure if that rule has changed)

    :good

The benefits that people get for not working whilst eligible are a joke. If you don't work and claim benefits, you should give up luxury items like cars, holidays, Sky TV etc, nights out, and live off food and clothing vouchers rather than other peoples hard earned deductions (N.I and tax)
It seems that a large percentage of people on benefits are just as well off, if not better off than people who slog for 38.5 hours or more a week.
