Froch: After Ward, I'll Likely Be Matched Against Bute

    By Keith Idec

NEW YORK — Carl Froch figures that if defeats Andre Ward in Showtime’s “Super Six World Boxing Classic” final he’ll battle Lucian Bute in his next fight to completely determine super middleweight supremacy.

Froch said. “And that’s fair enough, because that would then be a unification fight. That would be massive. So it’s not wrong to assume that’s what Ken Hershman from Showtime’s got up his sleeve, because he signed Bute.”

England’s Froch (28-1, 20 KOs) obviously believes he’ll become the first professional fighter to beat Ward (24-0, 13 KOs) when they meet Oct. 29 in Atlantic City for Froch’s WBC and Ward’s WBA 168-pound titles. Froch also predicted Bute (29-0, 24 KOs) will out-point Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KOs) when they square off a week later, Nov. 5, in either Montreal or Quebec City.

Bute’s fight against Johnson will be the second of a three-fight deal he signed with Showtime last year, presumably to eventually face the ‘Super Six’ winner. Froch has gone 3-1 in the two-year tournament, including a majority decision victory over Johnson on June 4 in Atlantic City.

Bute was born and raised in Romania, but has become a huge draw in and around Montreal, his adopted hometown. Froch feels the site might be the only point of contention if he and Bute win their respective fights against Ward and Johnson.

“It’s just where the fight will happen,” Froch said. “Will he come out of Canada? Will it be over in England? Will it be in America? But that’s definitely a fight that could happen and should happen, really, because after this ‘Super Six’ final, one guy should be determined or should have a chance to become the three-belt champion, the undisputed [super middleweight] champion of the world.”

I think people are ruling Bute out bigtime. I could foresee Froch beating Ward then getting beaten by Bute. He's no joke.

Be great if this actually happens. The last paragraph provides a key to all of it though - location. For my money, the Super Six winner becomes the key stakeholder in the division, and thus gets to dictate location.

Feels kind of like an easy way to be 168 king for bute, imo he needs to fight kessler first if hè beats johnson before hè deserves a shot.

Promoter Mick Hennessy is now set to bring Canada-based IBF champion Bute to Nottingham and said: “It is almost a done deal and it looks like being at the Nottingham Arena in one of the first two weeks of September.

“Bute’s camp is showing plenty of interest and they want to fight the very best.

    Carl Froch

Since beating Taylor, my popularity has soared and I find it hard even to walk down the street these days without being stopped,” said Froch. “To fight again in front of my fans will be marvellous. I was prepared to go and fight in Montreal against Bute if that was necessary, but it looks like it will now happen in Nottingham.

Thanks for posting the link, mate. That's great and all, but I didn't read past the date on the link - May, 2009! The siutation is a little different 2 1/2 years on.

To be fair, that doesn't have much relevance other than they were talking about a potential fight in the UK. Can you explain the relevance here?

I'm suggesting that the winner of the Super Six gets to dictate location - do you agree? Whether Ward or Froch wins, they should be in the drivers seat for negotiations as the anointed Number 1.

i love how Froch refuses to acknowledge the WBO. he only recognises 3 belts.

The winner of the Super Six is the best SMW in the world and should most definately have the choice of where the fight takes place.

If Froch wins, the fight should be in Nottingham and no questions asked. He's had 1 fight at world level in his hometown against Dirrell and the rest have been defences in foreign countries. He more than deserves a fight in his hometown, refusal should be acknowledged as an insult. Having said that, Froch would not be the kind of person to let venue hinder his claim to be the undisputed SMW champ and for the sake of the fans, would happily concede to a neutral venue or even Canada.

Ward is perhaps less deserving of fighting in his hometown because he's had all his Super 6 bouts in Oakland, but between him and Bute, Ward would be by far the more accomplished champion and should have the decision. A neutral venue would perhaps be more fitting for this fight, but for Bute to push for Canada would be unjust given his track record of fighting lesser competition.

the only way for the winner of the S6 to prove he is better than Bute is by fighting him or by Bute having some completely **** performance against someone else.

Making a tournament without the number 2 of the division (at the time) is unfair. Showtime recognized it in signing Bute.

Kessler could jave fought Bute but his promoter decided to take another path. I suspect Sauerland will let Bure take the first shot. That way, Kessler could face the winner. He would have only 1fight to make to be the undisputed champ.

I have nothing against bute, just think it would be more fair if he fights kessler and the winner fights the s6 winner who can heavy an easy stay busy fight after all those hard fights. then the winner would own all the belts in the division and it would be the most fair outcome for everyone and an ideal scenario for the division imo.

sounds like a good plan but can showtime drum up enough interest in Bute vs Kessler?

They should be able to, bute is pretty popular in Canada I think and kessler is in Denmark, only problem would be where the fight would take place.
Both guys are in the top 5 of 168 for sure so there should be enough interest in matching the winner with the s6 winner.

Kessler didn't wanted to be fair. Also do you believe it was fair for Bute to be left outside the tournament for 2 years?
