Froch v Groves 2 Final Thoughts

The under card lacked a bit for me. Was still some event. Fair play to GG, Froch and all the fans at Wembley. Made me feel proud to be British.

 

A rather red one.

 

Great show/event, gd fight, excellent ending

However would nvr go to a GG fight again, the fan boys at the fight were ridiculous, I had a guy sitting close to me who shouted and screamed the whole night, didn't even watch one fight, constantly craved attention from the crowd around him then all he shouted during the main event was "knock em out" at the top of his voice in a broad London accent

What happened in the 2nd fight is what I think the majority of us were expecting to happen in the 1st fight. I was at Wembley watching it live and even though you could see Groves was winning the early rounds on the scorecards, he never really landed anything significant (unlike the 1st fight). Every round which went by where he wasn't buzzing Froch with something big was a round for Froch! Froch abandoned his gameplan in the 1st fight after being dropped massively in the first round which looked like it had a "panic" effect on him - subsequently resulting in a bit of a thrashing up until the questionable TKO. He slowed it right down this time, choosing to feel Groves out with his jab in the early rounds, taking fewer risks. For me, you could see the fight change instantly in round 5 when Froch lands a good combo the body - he restored his confidence in himself and took the wind out of Groves. A few more body combos later and Groves was ripe for the hayemaker that KO'd him.

Well done Froch!

 

This is what I call the 'Hearns effect'.

In 'popularizing' sports they bring in the football crowd. They did exactly the same with darts. Raised its profile but at what expense to the fan?

Turning it into showbiz benefits the sport in some ways, and it certainly benefits the players (and promoters) financially, but it's strictly a matter of opinion as to whether it improves things from a grass roots fan's perspective. If you're a fully paid up member of the SKY club you'll no doubt love it all, and wonder what the f*ck I'm on about. Old gits like myself might not necessarily feel the same. But there ya go, that's 'progress'.

To expected really isn't it, most people like watching boxing but only some are properly into it like us. Saturday was good for me, couple of lads behind me who clearly knew what they were talking about so had a good chat with them.

The booing when the fight was slow and booing of Khan wound me up though.

Groves is too inexperienced. Has great potential . Reminds me if khan with power. Flashy style but ineffective at times. Big holes in defence

 

I'm no Groves fan but the sudden criticism of his abilities seems a bit harsh. Nobody was saying any such thing after the first fight, in fact he was being lauded for his performance. The difference this time was Froch's concentration and discipline not to take unneccassary punishment and create openings behind his own jab. Groves was coming back into the fight at the time of the KO but just got caught with a hell of a right hand. I was delighted with the result but I'm not going to now suddenly right Groves off as a 'never will be'!!

 

People can be very fickle.

Thought Groves performed well up untill the time he got startched.

Groves will come again and hopefully learn from it.

Froch proved he still has the punch.

 

I wanted Froch to win and thought he would grind Groves down and win in rounds 10-12. I didn't think it would be such a clear KO but a culmination effect. I think Groves fought the right fight actually and as it stood prior to the KO the fight was about level and Groves was starting to get on top in my opinion. I think he did well to pace himself and that was his plan.

Unfortunately he is a good fighter but he starts to make silly mistakes and lose it when starts to take shots. His shot resistance and stamina just aren't there at the very top and I think that will always be the case. He is still only 26 and lets not forget CF was 25 when he turned pro but I think he misses these key ingredients to ever be a highly succesful world champion boxer. That said I do think he could nick a world title, i just don't think he will defend it for very long.

 

GG has done well in both fights but got well overrated from the 1st fight

For me if someone puts pressure on him and lands some good shots he looks awful.
