A SKY source has reportedly told the US press that the Froch v Groves rematch smashed the British PPV record, bringing in 1.3 million buys 2 weeks back. It shatters the previous record set by Ricky Hatton in his unforgettable fight with Floyd Mayweather back in 2007.
Dan Rafael has reported that it did 900k, which if true would mean that it sold less than Mayweather v Hatton.
Sources have just revealed that all Boxnation subscribers streamed the fight along with 30 million others
Exactly, who the hell pays for boxing these days. It seems any big fight is PPV worthy now in the eyes of the promoter.
It's only going to get worse for broadcasters. Within 5 years people will literally be able to watch top fights on very very high quality streams with little to no buffering/lag time. The promotors NEED to contain this stream growth by offering PPV streams for every fight. If they don't do this NOW, they are going to find themselves in too much of a hole. If they offer decent streams for fights, people will definitely pay and less and less people will go looking for illegal streams. I already know a lot of people who have cancelled their BN and Sky and now watch every fight on streaming sites.
And not a chance. The US and UK are severely cracking down on streaming sites. At least 3 big ones inc. Guru have gone this past quarter.
Not a hope in hell of stopping the streams. Takes months to close a site and when it eventually closes - up pops another 5 and the cycle repeats. Everything is available on the internet now and Aint no stopping it now
Indeed which is why it's genuinely baffling why sky don't do PPV streams like top rank do (think eddie said it had something to do with getting people to subscribe to sky, but it's very much cutting your nose to spite your face) Btw was this fight available on the likes of virgin media and other providers on ppv
A bit unfair to say Hatton Mayweather was an unforgettable fight. Thousands travelled to Vegas and the build up was huge, Hatton gave the world number 1 a good contest before being halted late on.
