Btw, Jpab did you ever have the pleasure of watching the Cherry Bomb explode? There was nothing better than watching The Cherry Bomb do his thing on a Wednesday night fights. I followed his career and would nonchalantly throw his name out there for anyone who would listen. lol At one point Cherry Bomb's stock started to rise from the NASDAQ back to the NYSE. That was when he viciously KO'ed some ham and eggs called Johnston in the 10th...and almost put him to sleep literally. Don't know where Cherry learned to sit on his punches and use the jab as a blinder, but there he was, back in the mix at lw. C+ fighter that was starting to move to B- status with pretty damn good footwork as well. I've hardly seen him since Holyfield Jr. clocked him with a counter right hand on the kisser. WHERE IS MY CHERRY BOMB? How i miss the Cherry and Wednesday night fights. If anyone responds to this post in the next 20 minutes, then I know you have the same degenerative sickness that I do. Edner Cherry on Wednesday Night Fights...damn, life didn't get much better than that, lol.
Should Ward get to fight his whole career in the US? It's a completely circular argument. The reason Bute fights in Canada is because he's a draw. Why would he go elsewhere and make less money? He likely makes more money than Ward. It's a weird double-standard when it comes to Ward. He seems to get the benefit of the doubt for openly saying he won't fight Bute. Who else is there at 168? Fair enough he wants the fight at home, but he's not got a divine right to it or anything. Bute's been a beltholder for longer. There's not much difference between the two - just the Froch and Kessler wins - and you could argue Bute makes up the distance by beating common opponents in better fashion.
Slip, I'm an ESPN enthusiast, I've got a lot of love for just about any fighter who became a staple for them, be that Cherry, Manny Augustus, Antwone Smith, and countless others. The back-and-forth he had with J.A Santa Cruz was what I think introduced most people to the dude, completely stole the show despite the fact that Jose Luis Castillo was headlining the card. That fight was crazy, Edner had Cruz over pretty early on and proceeded to leave him looking drowsy a few rounds later too, I was gutted that he ended up losing that one(interestingly - or not - that fight was in 2006 I think, but I only watched it in 2009 after having been recommended it by someone, I didn't know the result of it, I really was gutted when Cherry didn't get the W, such was how much I loved his performance). He was in the mould of, say, a Kendall Holt regarding his KO %, very misleading. Added to the Johnson demolition you mentioned, he also stopped Monty Meza Clay and Dan Alica(sp?). The former - despite being a complete midget - was a pretty highly regarded up and comer and the latter was around about fringe contender level. He could crack when he felt like it, and even when he wasn't knocking dudes out he would make them damn well respect his power. It's a shame he's gone off the radar though, he's usually rebounded after enduring a bad spell, he got clowned by Malignaggi and still came back to make himself relevant again by earning his chance with Bradley. I still thought he could make some waves, he was soundly beaten but he put up a valiant effort, I thought a move to 135 was possible, obviously not. I feel your pain.
