...Is a Combination of TWO THINGS!!! 1. I have been living here in Las Vegas for 10 years now and California for 2 years. I have been fortunate to have met several Boxing Judges. And because of my profession (media) I have had the opportunity to have extended conversations about how they became involved in the sport. And ALL of you (readers) would be shocked to learn that a LARGE PERCENTAGES of Boxing Judges (at least the ones I have met in Nevada & California) are only "OCCASIONAL OR NOVICE" fans of the sport and are only judges because they are friends of or "closely in bed..politically" with The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) or The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). I met a female judge (I will not reveal her name), who told me an amazing story of how she became a Boxing judge. Her husband was scheduled to judge an IBF Title fight in 2001, However he got sick (he was 61 by the way)...So they gave his wife a #2 pencil and a scorecard and told her...AND I AM QUOTING HER..."IF A FIGHTER WINS A ROUND, WRITE 10 IN THE BOX AND IF A FIGHTER LOST THE ROUND WRITE 9". And its now 2009, and yes...SHE IS STILL A JUDGE. 2. People need to understand that there is a MAJOR difference between Boxing Knowledge and Boxing Appreciation. The same people that are always leaving post on ESB, Max-Boxing, Youtube fights...saying stupid S.H.I.T like "He's a runner, he doesn't fight like a man...blah blah blah". They don't APPRECIATE skill, precision jabs, avoiding punches, landing combinations without getting touch, foot-movement...etc. And there are tons of Boxing judges who have this same IDIOTIC AND JUVENILE thought process when it comes to sitting ringside and Judging Fights which results in REALLY BAD DECISIONS!!! Boxing is more than just closing your eyes and swinging wildly at your opponent...It doesn't take talent to do that...I saw two pimps in an alley behind a Las Vegas Greyhound station do the dame ****! Its take someone to have an APPRECIATION OF BOXING..."THE SWEET SCIENCE" to be a Excellent Boxing Judge. Example: I have seen way too often...A fighter dominates a round for 2:30 with great head movement, quick "scoring" combinations, a swift jab..then with seconds left in the round...the other fighter lands a good body shot followed by some power shots to the head (didn't knock him down nor hurt him, just some good shots)....IT DOES NOT MEAN HE WINS THE ROUND BASED ON SECONDS OF POWER SHOTS!!!! Then at the end of close fight...you'll have two score cards that read 120-108 while one judge will have it 114-113 for the other fighter. I don't believe its corruption nor political...These Athletic Commissions were only designed to regulate Licensures, supervision of promoters, boxers, ring officials, managers and matchmakers. And Internationally...Especially in Latin America and Europe...The fight style is mostly Brawling...So their Judges have NO CLUE how to Judge a CLASSIC BOXER. A fighter that moves well, that avoids getting hit, and scores well with Jabs....INTERNATIONAL JUDGES ARE LOST WHEN SCORING THIS STYLE!!! I have always said that there should a better, more pro-active committee in searching for and /or hiring more and better Judges for Amateur and Professional Boxing. IF NOT...There will continue to be more of: Roy Jones Jr in Seoul Olympics - HORRIBLE Whitaker vs Julio Cesar Chavez - AWFUL De La Hoya vs Trinidad - BULL**** De La Hoya vs Sturm - A DAMN SHAME Castillo vs Maweather 1 - POOR SCORING BUT NOT A ROBBERY Malinaggi vs Diaz - TEXAS HAS THE WORST JUDGES ANYWAY Froch vs Direll - Not a Bad Decision, But Direll Throw more, landed more. I always felt Judges should be Former Fighters and Trainers. I think State Athletic Commissions and International Athletic Commissions should encourage more Former Fighters and Trainers to get involved with Judging Fights. Think About it....Figure Skating, Diving & Gymnastic Competition Judges are ALL Former Competitors or Coaches...Professional and College Football and Basketball Officials have played "ball" on some level (Some Professional). So Why is it only in Boxing are Judges simply OLD ASS FARTS WHO HAVE NEVER FOUGHT, TRAINED NOR KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT THE SPORT!!!! THAT IS COMPLETELY F**KING UN-ACCEPTABLE!!!!
If what you said about is true about the woman who replaced her husband at the last minute, that's unreal. I guess this is just one more reason why boxing has such a pathetic following and why the sport is a joke in the way it's set up.
That was a truly enlightening and horrific read. Its sickening that this once great sport is run by idiots.
Some bad decisions are politically motivated, some are by just plain stupid judges. Different **** can attribute to a bad decision. Commissions need to crack down on the **** tho.
Another problem that goes hand in hand with the incompetence described above is the lack of accountability. No one will ask that judge who scored Diaz/Mallinagi 118-110 to explain himself. There will be no repurcussions. In March 2008 Bronco McKart and Raul Marquez fought a 10 rounder. The fight was origninally ruled a split decision for Marquez. When McKart's father looked at the scorecards it was obvious that two of the judges had actually gone back over their cards and changed the scoring on a few rounds to favor Marquez. The cards were posted on line at one time. I could not find them just now. The outcome was eventually changed to a draw, but the damage was done. Marquez went on to fight Lorenzo which led to a fight with Abraham, and several hundred thousand dollars in earnings. Bronco sat for 9 months! None of the officials suffered any consequences.
Not to credit the MMA but they have it good since the majority of the time its a tap out or a knock out. In boxing where it is more of a science the officials should be trained and tested yearly to keep up there license. This crap where they become an official and are never tested or asked about their scorecards for the rest of their lives is ludacris.
how do most judges get there licences ? im pretty sure theres no colleges that offer courses or degree's in fight scoring and im really curious to know how the majority of these dickheads get there licences
Since you are offering this challenge, I think the onus is on anyone who you called a racists to show you are wrong. Here's your proof. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141183&highlight=racists&page=5 McVey wrote : I dont accuse you of being a Bigot ,I tell you openly you are one, and, if you were standing in front of me I would happily confirm it for you. Bigot doesn't mean the same thing as racist –noun a person who is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion.
No, a poster shouldn't leave if he is proven wrong. Why? Because we are adults and this is an internet forum. Tear a strip off him, then move on. You will probably agree on something next week or have a decent discussion about something. The way that crazy forum vultures (not you Mendoza, but I have seen it elsewhere) swoop on someone who doesn't take it as seriously as them and tries to hound them out is just pathetic. We don't need that. Give him an earful then forget about it.
