I think this has to be one of the toughest fights to call this year. It really is 50/50. I see an early KO or a disputable points win.
What's so intriguing about this fight for me is not just that it's possibly the two best british fighters in the world against each other (I'm a brit), or the bad blood between the two, or the pressroom antics, or the excellent first fight and its controversial nature, but that it's really a pick 'em fight for me. On the one hand Groves was dominating Froch in that first fight. On the other I think Froch is being honest when he says that was an off night for him and he didn't adequately prepare. I think Froch will perform much better, but I think Groves might as well. I see the following four possibilities: 1. Dominating early KO for Froch. 2. Wide outboxing and UD for Groves ala fight 1. 3. Hagler-Hearns style hate filled rage fest. All out war ending in round 3 for either man. 4. To and fro ending in a bad, yet not egregious, decision in Groves' favour as rectification for the bogus stoppage.
Just rewatched the first fight, aswell as groves fight before on the kessler vs froch 2 undercard (neo gonzales), groves vs anderson and groves johnson fights. All froch fights since Jermain Taylor is fresh in mind, so didnt watch any other Froch fights. George Groves has developed massively since the Anderson fight (only KD IIRC), much more calm movement and loading up on shots. Of the fights I watched it seems like he did a better job on Froch for the first 7-8 rounds than in the other fights (competetion taken in consideration). Imo. he has Frochs number stylewise and my logic says that he should win over Froch on points, fairly easy. One thing I did notice in his previous fights and the froch fight, if he gets hits silly, he has tendency to take defence down and retaliate, which speaks in Frochs favour of KO sometime. But overall fwiw. and given how groves has improved and does show a boxing brain, logical result: Points win George Groves.
ValentinePrince good post and you are right, that's intriguing, but really only because it's all based on emotions. Take a calm and cold look again at the first fight, and look how the two have been improving recently. I think most people will agree that Groves can box Frochs ears of for 12, if he is diciplined and doesnt get in to a brawl. Can he do it this time around?
Froch to look 47 never mind 37, he will be the epitome of shot fighters, i fully expect Jim Watt to tell us the signs were there in the first fight, now we have conclusive proof Froch is gone.
I want froch but have betted on groves points, no matter how much of fan I am I never bet with my heart
Yeah it seems like he did praise booth quite alot before one of the earlier fights, said stuff like he only took on fighters he believed had the potential to be world champs (makes sense of course...). No idea what happened between the two and who that patty fitz guy is. It didnt seem to be a problem for his performance in the first froch fight, so probably it wont be now either.
