In fairness, not Tyson, since he wasn't a shot zombie until 2001 (Nielsen bout).

It says "mediocrity". I would say Tyson wasn't a mediocre fighter until 2001, when he became a shot sluggish blimp.

 

Mark Breland deserves a mention in this thread

 

Breland is a good one. It was a great fight, but he absolutely stunk against Aaron Davis.

I'll say Prince Naseem is a candidate. I can't even recall the name of the opponent, but his last ever fight was horrendous. That Barrera defeat was hook, line an sinker for him.

 

Its gotta be Benny Lynch

Lynch's demise in this instance, is not the same as "a bright up-and-coming star's", light fizzling out.

Lynch's defeats were against great top men of a great period, considered very normal to lose the odd fight against other top fighters - though Lynch's alcohol problem was already then evident.

But Lynch is not a case of a bright star suddenly diming.

 

That's a pretty good choice. Went in the tournament a favorite, get whooped by Quarry, then not much later KO'ed by Mac Foster, in one roung I think.

 

In the early 80s Robin Blake was buzzing along as a hot lightweight prospect. Then, thru poor match making, in put in with cutey Tyrone "Butterfly" Crawley, loses a lopsided decision and was never the same.

 

Here's an obvious one, "Big" John Tate.

Another contender that disappeared after one loss was 80's heavyweight Marty Monroe. Monroe looked pretty good in some match ups on CBS' Sports Spectacular. They put him in with the much mobile (at the time) Greg Page. Page was all wrong for Monroe, Marty took a beating and never fought again.

Well i am fully aware of his varying degrees of Technical, Physical & Mental deterioration over the years...but can you honestly say Tyson looks "shot" here in 2000?

Mike was relatively slow (in Tyson terms), but Brooks had done a pretty nice job with him here, making the best Post-Prison Tyson* (from a Technical perspective). Observe the headmovent, jab & side-stepping footwork.

*Overall he was still better in say Holy I & Bruno II as obviously the "Bite-Ban layoff" rotted his body further, but read the preceding point in brackets.
