Where is the erratic poster Baileys Tunes these days ?

    Is he still alive ?

Your pops was a fighter? that flew right past me. :patsch Isn't it great getting the views on the game from that generation though.

I've told some of regulars this before but my pops was a boxer in the Army.

He loved/loves boxing so much that he use to give my mom and little sis the credit card to go shopping and see a movie just so he could have me stay at home and watch tapes to study Ray, Duran and especially Holmes' jab. Then he would take me out to the garage and make me turn over the gloves to a box at impact which is the key to cutting your opponent - hardcore bro!

It's been a while actually since I"ve had a proper chat about the sport with him and asked him about the state of the game today. I'm sure he'll throw out some zingers as I'm seeing him tomorrow. I know that he loves DLH's triple threat boxing stance because he emailed me after the Forbes fight and said, "even though the hunger's gone, the shoulders and chin don't lie"...or something to that effect. I know it sounds like a reach but these old timers know old school stances and his favourite stance was Carlos Zarate.

:good Yes, he was active during the 60's and early 70's. Is your dad still involved in the game? How old is he? Zarate was my favourite when I was a young lad.

Is your Dad still following boxing?

I like Zarate but hes just a guy I'm not huge on, I see his greatness and all that just soemthing not there but maybe I need to watch more.

Also your Dad vs Zarate would be some scrap.

I f'n love Zarate, but think Olivares would beat him.

I used to think Jofre would beat Olivares, but need to re-review him as I'm quite big on Olivares at the moment (again)

Truly brilliant. As were all the men, but I feel he and Jofre and are the clear no.1&.2.

Not so much now but he still go's the ex boxers do's. He'll watch a big fight if he's with us.
He always was a boxing buff in his younger days and I think he'd be quite comforable talking on here talking about the old fighters up to about the 70's.
Robinson, Pep Manuel Ortiz, Ross, Canzoneri, Berg etc are the fighters he looked up to and he knows all about the fighters from his own time when he was a real student of the game.
I remember him telling me once that he'd had a nightmare in which he'd made a comeback and he was fighting Lupe Pintor. Don't know wether the Johnny Owen fight was playing on his mind.
I think he would of been more comfortable against Zarate than he was against Olivares, he took a good shot and after the first few rounds would have had more chance of getting into his stride. Styles make fights!
