Kessler would win. His boxing brain and technical skill and punching power would be to much for Bute. The stoppage aside Bute was caught with a couple of shots by a sub par Mendy. I feel that had it been Kessler in there tonight he would have backed Bute up and out boxed him to win a fairly clear decision. I know i'm going to get alot of stick for this but its just what i think.

I hardly think you're gonna get stick mate. Seems people that like Bute are more likely to get stick since his record is paper thin.

Bute is very talented whether people like his level of competition or not. He has the ability to beat any 168 pounder in the world I think, with maybe ward beimg the exception.

I'm still stand that - I will judge him once he steps up in opposition. Until then these fights are pointless.

Level of competition is just one factor when assessing a fighters worth. Now, granted it's probabily the most important one, but if you have a keen boxing eye than you can tell how good a fighter is regardless of who he's facing by taking some of the other factors and judging him by that.

Just look past the opponents for a sec (which aren't all as bad as people are making out) and look at the skillset and special qualities Bute is displaying. Look at the way he's dispatching these guys, his ability to land certain shots, his variety, his defense and most importantly how he's being effective.

Bute is not overwhelming these fighters with athleticism or power, he's dissecting them and taking them out cleanly.

He's a sneaky, sharp puncher, who throws shots that come from underneath (watch out Andre Ward) he counters well, his footwork is tops, he tucks his chin in his chest, he turns his shoulder, he pivots and he doesn't give you the same look twice.

I'm gonna say it, this kid is the truth. He beats Kessler right now. Kessler is too basic and he's faded. Froch/Bute is a toss-up and as much as i like Andre Ward, Bute would give him hell.

I don't understand how you can claim this....if he hasn't faced anyone of note how in hell can you tell.

You can tell by watching him that he's good. Its not even difficult to see, he hardly looks bog standard. Kid is dynamite, very fast, very accurate, has loads of variety. Some of him remains untested or has question marks over him which is fair enough but to not be able to see his talents just because he isn't fighting the best is silly.

Based on what? The fact that he bests C/D level opposition on a regular basis? Bute is a quintessential example of a boxer who benefits from the alphabet soup mess that fractures and obscures the 'World Title'.

Bute can not be considered any higher - at this stage - than a B level fighter in the SMW division. It's all very well looking good against sub-par opposition but until he steps into the ring and beats someone like Dirrell or Johnson or even the damaged goods that is Abraham, you are only surmising; hypotheticals do nothing for me. How the fuck can you say he has the capacity to operate on or near the same level as Ward, Froch or Kessler?

Predict the next profession Bute selects the next 'challenger' to his 'title':

    a. cab driver;
    b. civil servant; or
    c. off-duty policemen.

N.B. slip&counter, nothing personal, I hope you understand.

Look at Sven Ottke fight. Then look at Bute fight.

It's a stupid comparison, especially when people say he's only as good as Ottke, which is obscene. The old man's got an awful lot of talent and that's plain to see. I don't see how you can question that he's got tonnes of ability. As slip said, level of competition isn't the be-all and end-all when judging a fighter. He's clearly got a lot of substance to go with his style, and stylistically he'll be extraordinarily difficult for his potential adversaries to overcome.

Its easy to see his potential and ability though, and in spite of his overall lackluster resume he has a few decent names on his record. And the way he has gotten rid of his opponents mostly in good stlye would lead me to believe hes a far higher level than hes currently fighting at.

Hey, i've been as critical of Bute's level of competition as anyone else. The whole forum will tell you that. But from what i see the guys seriously talented and i trust my eyes. Now, i could be wrong so we'll just have to wait and see...

The problem is, we have all been waiting to see for about 3 years. While all the best guys at 168 (and a few others) have been squaring up to each other, Bute is STILL scrapping with the most mediocre opposition available to a chorus of sycophantic rapture. :tired

You'll get no arguments over here with those sentiments. I'm as frustrated as you are with Bute's steady diet of stiffs. To be fair to Bute though most of the top guys have been tied up and there's conflicting stories about who was responsible for him being left out of the tourney.

He has beaten Miranda and Bika better than Ward did. And he avenged that loss to Andrade in impressive fashion. Hopefully with the super six coming to a close now he'll prove himself against the best. I know you won't be holding your breath...;)
