The moment arm between the bar and the knee during a front squat is longer than that of a back squat, while during the back squat the moment arm between the hips and the bar is longer than the moment arm to the knee, or at least equal to it. Thus it is a more hip dominant exercise.
Back squat is still king but it isn't something people should jump into with both feet. Front squat and box squats are much better for beginning to intermediate lifters. Box squats are the best for teaching form and front squats force proper form. You cant cheat a front squat as easily as a back squat. The same cheats that you can do with a back squat will cause you to drop a front squat. Many athletic trainers require you to earn the right to back squat. I know DeFranco will work box and front squats first.
http://speedendurance.com/2013/01/2...rnerstone-of-strength-training-for-sprinters/ Mate, believe me, if you think Squats are HIP DOMINANT then you are clueless. I have to agree with BEATDOWNZ here and say that the DL is a HIP dominant exercise and the Squat is a KNEE dominate exercise! "In other words, a hip dominant movement is a deadlift, and a knee dominant movement is a squat. An example of a hip dominant exercise that jives with Dan and Pavel's "deep hip movement with minimal knee bend" would be the kettlebell swing (shown below)." ^^ http://www.t-nation.com/training/deadlift-or-squat-whats-the-diff Ask ANY strength coach with a brain or who is highly respected (Pavel and Dan John put that quote above btw), and they'll agree with me.
Never said it wasn't pal, simply meant there is more knee flexion during the front squat than the back squat. I can see why what I said may have been misinterpreted. Glad we cleared that one up.
