Feeling a bit frustrated at the moment with my sparring and am looking for ideas/help. On the pads I'm very quick, powerful and fit for my size and experience but I can't seem to translate that in the ring. Hooks never seem to be in range, I can't find the range or angle to let my hands go, I quickly tire etc... Its frustrating the hell out of me. Anyone ever experience the same? Any ideas?
i dont know how much experience you have or if you have faught or not. But you need to relax when you spar. And its just experience i suppose. The more you spar the better you will be. If your struggling with your sparring go back to establishing a jab and things should usually fall into place. Give your self a task every round you spar and keep working at it untill you have fixed it.
Fought once. Have about 2 years experience. I think I'd be best as a pressure fighter I just can't seem to let those shots go!
sounds like its a footwork problem from the limited details. just guessing but do you not shadow box or work on your footwork and only do bag work and sparring, pads etc? try using footwork to get in range feint or throw a jab and then once your inside start throwing hooks etc. obviously its alot easier said than done but practice practice practice.
Yes I think that's exactly the problem. I know I shouldn't fight in straight lines but just don't know how NOT to? I do mainly sparring and pad work to be honest. Anything other details I can add to make this clearer? How do you work on footwork?
one thing i learnt when doing a coaching course is to stick 3 pieces of tape on the floor in an arrow shape. like below but make sure all "lines" are equal This content is protected Starting in the middle line move forward with a jab and use your footwork to come out in the right line throwing a right then do the same over and over again but using different lanes throwing different punches (im struggling to explain it without being there to show lol) shadow boxing is good also when using the bag i try using footwork throughout to get in range and if im throwing hooks to the body i try and spin around the bag imagining im fighting someone whos on the ropes like ricky hatton used to do.
Think I may have a moment of clarity with this today. I'm not a counter puncher. I'm not a tactical, long distance fighter. I'm a pressure fighter. Let some off, move inside and let my hands go. I've only just realised it! I'm so much better when I throw and move inside. Angles appear, I can let my hands go etc.
Still dont move in a straight line, and you may say that, but when you get in the ring, you have to have the confidence to let your hands go... Just keep your jab going, and thats enough to keep someone from beating you up at least if they have something to worry about.
