Jose Manuel Lopez vs. Mike Arnaoutis, 10 rounds @ welterweight

 

Asked about adjustment after his flight, Arnaoutis (referencing the gap in time zones) said "I feel good now, but come the fight - that will be when I'm supposed to be asleep!"

The commentators are having a good laugh at his expense over that unintentional self-deprecating barb and potential unfortunate prediction.

 

You never heard of Arnaoutis? He was a pretty good fighter back in his day - nearly a decade ago now. :!:

 

After the Holt & Torres wars, I don't think Mike was ever the same. That is twenty-four consecutive rounds that would ruin anybody even were they not exiting their natural prime.

He was barely able to put up a fight with Ortiz.

He did turn back the clock with Coleman and IMO got robbed, but from there it's all been downhill - getting dominated several times and only beating two losing-record journeymen.

Round 1

Arnaoutis is popping the high right jab while stepping to his left, keeping his legs spread equidistant with feet at shoulder width as he keeps a slight turn inward to his stance. Lopez is pivoting and locating Arnaoutis with the left jab high and low, taking his time with it and throwing judiciously.

Round 2

Arnaoutis is tossing right jabs up past Lopez's face while circling. Lopez is firing the lead right past Arnaoutis' jab and landing on the bridge of the nose to cause Arnaoutis' head to jerk. Lopez keeps following and jabbing the body, doubling the jab up top into the air or Arnaoutis' gloves. Arnaoutis loses his gum shield. In. Arnaoutis is jabbing into Lopez's left forearm, and sneaks one in on Lopez's face. Left uppercut from outside by Arnaoutis, landing on the belt line. Lopez is cutting the ring off, stepping to either side when Arnaoutis motions as if to circle that way. Flurries at the bell from both at distance while stepping laterally facing each other.

I always rooted for him, but like I said in an earlier post, after 2007 or so the wheels had begun to come off. (although he did pop Lanardo Tyner's cherry in an upset headlining FNF, and should have been given the nod over Pitbull Coleman...)

 

Round 3

Lopez is stepping in and jabbing Arnaoutis in the chest. Arnaoutis is circling to his right and tightening his arms over his chest, making the adjustment to keep out Lopez's jab while scoring his right jab from outside when Lopez bends in to jab the lower body. Arnaoutis is whipping in left hand leads on the stomach. 1-2 by Arnaoutis. Lopez catches some right jabs on the underside of his left glove. Lopez lands a 1-2 coming forward and hooks Arnaoutis on the belt line. Arnaoutis scores a knockdown at the end of the round with a soft right jab! Lopez's gloves and one knee brush the canvas just and he is given a count just before the bell!
