Thomas Hill vs. Mark Anthony Hernandez, 6 rounds @ light middleweight

 

Two unbeaten prospects.

 

Hill is pretty tall for the division at 6'1" but Madman Hernandez seems to have at least a couple of inches on him.

 

Round 1

Hernandez is carrying his fists low and throwing lead right uppercuts from outside - generally inadvisable but he is scoring them on the chest and using them like a brush-clearing machete to get his jab onto Hill's face by forcing his guard to lower. Hill is dashing in with his 1-2 and just s****ing the bottom of Hernandez's chin with it, or wedging it down into his throat if he even does get a piece of him. Constant leftward movement by Hernandez, arms dangling, baiting Hill to charge so he can swoop in and counter with the uppercut followed by the jab (or the same in reverse order).

Round 2

Hernandez is sticking with his game plan, slouching, giving up the height advantage but still keeping his distance to employ his longer arms, catching Hill with loose anti-aircraft counters from below while sagging his shoulders and dipping under Hill's straightforward attacks, moving left in a rhythmic sashay all the while. Hill switches tacks and tries some hard left hooks on the body. He lands a few successfully at first but Hernandez just widens his arc circling around Hill, and works some long poking and slashing body shots of his own.

Round 3

Hernandez is gliding to his left and casting in long straight rights on the body. Hill doubles a sharp jab running in. Hernandez sidesteps and swipes with a looping right on the body. Long counter left hooks now by Hernandez, knocking Hill back a step. Quick salvo of body shots by Hill jumping in. Clinch. Hill tries jabbing on his taller foe on the outside but Hernandez is able to slip by twisting and ducking, or dodge by simply leaning away. Counter uppercut on the gut by Hernandez as Hill leaps at him. Clash of heads.

This is a much better fight than McAllister vs. Yorubá was - so now I'm wishing it had been this + Castaño vs. Upshaw + the main event.

 

Hill is the "house guy", by the way - Haymon signed & trains at Mayweather's gym.

 

Round 4

Both men digging in hard on the body. Hernandez is weaving in and scoring hard wrecking-ball lefts downstairs and then finishing with a shoeshine on the face. Hill is backing up and taking big swings from behind the back, changing altitudes every time he throws. Hernandez giving him little target, his natural edge in stature keeping his face safely aloft so all he needs to do is recline to avoid punches, and his long arms folded protectively over his rib cage.

Round 5

Hernandez is curling his spine, resting his jaw on Hill's shoulder and imposing his size on him, bulldozing him across the ring and whipping the body with long shots reaching around the elbows. Hill slaps up top, unable to fend him off. Hill now plants his feet and throws a hard combination of hooks on the belt line, able to get a little separation. Hernandez is taking more time off now, stalling, leaning down on Hill, not punching as much. Hill gets in another stiff body shot combo. Hernandez clinches. Hernandez misses an overhand right as Hill touches him on the pectorals with a quick stabbing right up on his toes before darting away.

10-9 Hernandez, very close, another ten seconds of that momentum and Hill could've stolen it.

50-45 Hernandez

 

Hernandez maybe gassing a little. His father is concerned in the corner before the sixth.

 

Round 6

Hernandez is lobbing a jab and overhand right from outside. Hill zigzags his way in with a tight guard and starts hooking on the flanks of Hernandez in rapid fashion, hips swiveling, putting starch on his punches. Hernandez is very sluggish of arm now, punching as though underwater. Hill covers up and takes a harpoon right on the body, and springs forward as Hernandez withdraws for a breather. Hill is throwing nonstop body hooks. Slapping left hook by Hernandez. More body shots by Hill. Another slapping left across the cheek by Hernandez.

To be fair, in his defense, the ring announcer did say it was scheduled for 6.
