he is not a big supermiddle, although he does look thin and dry making weight at 168 let alone 160. honest answer is a simply do not know if he will have his legs at 160. from experience getting down in weight to low makes you fine in the upper body, but like bambi in the legs dept, but obviously time will tell. as to competing skillwise, imo there are sturm/pavlik/abraham. unless there is some prospect i have not seen mundine will be very competitive at 160, thats if he takes on one of the champs and does not go for some kind of super duper belt.
One of the reasons I asked is that most fighters go up. If the MW division was so 'weak' as people claimed, he could have done this before and been king by now. At least the 168 crowd has long claimed Mundine as just ONE of the people Pavlik couldn't beat at SMW. Bottom line though, until I see him make weight and fight at 160, I'm not willing to rate him among the top in that division yet. I think I'm one of the few people that believe both Taylor and Miranda took too long to move up because they were showing signs of weakness from weight loss. I think there was a reason Taylor was fighting JMW in his last two fights before Pavlik. Miranda's weight issues are pretty well documented. That is why I'll wait on Mundine.
It's funny how the Ottke KO always comes up as if it is hugely relevant. As embarrasing as it was, it only serves to prove the point Mundine has extremely good defence and reflexes, if his jaw is indeed shakey. He never got knocked out, or even hurt much, against some big punchers since. It hit him on the temple too, and he was a virtual novice to the sport This goes pretty much the same as the Pascal fight would have, I see the speed and boxing skill making the big difference. Zuniga has to get in close, and find the KO, he can't possibly box with Mundine. Mundine's handspeed and jab should keep the fight under control. To count on a Zuniga win you really have to see him landing a big punch, which isn't easy or particularly probable Mundine by clear decision.
Will he be the same athlete at 160? I think your favorite fighter, Taylor, was already suffering the effects of fighting too light but wanted to maintain his titles and that started reflecting in his performance and choice of naturally lighter men.
I presumed this would be at 168 anyway, since Zuniga is now fighting there and Mundine has yet to prove he can make 160 I don't believe for a second he can, looking at him on the scales
I lost sight of this being another 'hypothetical'. I guess and was focused on Mundine's vacating and announcing he is moving down. Make it a 'catch weight' of 164. Seems like Mundine would have been better off fighting Kessler and seeing how that played out before just vacating and announcing he was moving down in weight.
Oganov is not in Mundine's class. Guy also drew with Zertuche. Maybe the fact that he had success against Pavlik shows Pavlik's limitations against a high workrate fighter, hell, imagine Calzaghe's left hook.:hey
I thnk Zuniga wins. Mundine seems kinds wimpy to me. He is willing to fight Sam Solimon for a third time after defeating him twice before but would rather give up a title belt rather than attempt to avenge a loss to Mikkel Kessler?! atsch
