Here is a rather long and detailed interview done around the time the contract was signed a few weeks ago. I'd been holding this one off since it was so long, but it gives a good perspective on JMM's thoughts on the surrounding circumstances. Enjoy.

Better late than never: Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez, current lightweight champion, signed the contract that will put him opposite historic Filipino Manny Pacquiao for the third time in his career. 3 years have passed since their last confrontation. Marquez has basically swept up the division, and Pacquiao went on furthering himself as a legend. Marquez has the antidote to make the Tagalog suffer; Manny has sent him to the canvas 4 times. Whatever happens, we can now declare with absolute confidence that, while it lasts, the spectacle is guaranteed. Marquez has proven to be the nemesis of Pacquiao- a rock in his shoe. It will be for the welterweight title at a maximum weight of 144 pounds. The question is, does Marquez concede too much? Will it now be easier for Manny? Can he defeat Pacquiao with 38 years behind him? To know this, we'll have to wait a few months. Announcer Dude: Hello friends, a pleasure to greet you, we welcome you to Golpe a Golpe this week, Juan Manuel Marquez, Jorge Eduardo Sanchez (that's announcer dude), and now the presence of our friend David Faitelson (another ESPN commentator). How are you David? Welcome.

Faitelson: Good Jorge Eduardo, how are you? Champion, congratulations, good to see you.

JMM: Thank you, good to see you as well.

Let's review here firstly the details.The fight: 12th of November; for the WBO Welterweight title, the titleholder evidently being Manny Pacqiuao; the place would presumably be the MGM Grand in Las Vegas; and the series contains one victory for Pacquiao, split-decision, and one draw, also; questionable decisions. This fight is agreed to be at 144 pounds, as we said at the beginning of this episode. Friends, Juan Manuel, all of boxing was revolving around your business during the week, you sign the contract, how was the process? Elaborate for us. You went to Los Angeles, who did you see, and at what agreement did you come to?

JMM: Well, see it was a kind of tiring process, to be talking about the clauses of the contract, wanting to correct a few of them, but, I think that by the end of it we were late with two days analyzing and looking at it, but a good agreement was made. They accepted it, and I think it's very good.

Announcer Dude: Can the details be known Juan?
JMM: Well details are that they wanted my image/likeness to be sold to them, they wanted my image/likeness to become exclusively for their use. And so what we did was, well we had it so that they changed it, including that they wanted me to fight some other fights as well, that was also changed, because what we're going for is this fight and that's priority, but I think that those were things that went in my favor.

Faitelson: So at the end, was there doubt concerning the contract with Oscar De La Hoya, and that Pacquiao is a fighter who exclusively belongs to Arum? How did you make it so that Arum and De La Hoya accepted this fight?

JMM: See David, here the question has to do with the fact that my contract with Golden Boy expired, but they had a clause in my contract that said that they had the right to match any offer that was made, that was made by Top Rank. They didn't match it so now I end up free to do this fight.

Faitelson: So you're free from the contract to do this fight?

JMM: Yes, free.

Faitelson: And you signed a new contract with Arum?

JMM: I haven't signed anything, the only thing I signed was the contract for this fight with Pacquiao, and it's the only thing I signed.

Faitelson: And you conducted your own business?

JMM: Well no, I have people behind me, my lawer, and they tell me what to do. For example, this-

Faitelson: But you're there right, vigilant?

JMM: Yes I'm there, exactly, I'm seeing what needs to be changed or what's good in a contract.

Faitelson: That's good, that's good.

Announcer Dude: Now Juan Manuel, time has passed, and we see here images of Manny Pacquiao- thin, very different to what he is today in the welterweight division. What do you expect, how do you imagine a fight against Pacquiao at 144 pounds? He evidently could come in heavier, 145, 146 on the night of the fight...what do you expect in that fight, of his speed, of his punch, of his durability, the whole of Manny Pacquiao?

JMM: I expect to see Manny Pacquiao as we've always seen him, as the people have been seeing him: a strong opponent who has a respectable punch, a hard punch, so I expect him as I did in the two fights I had with him, including the fact that I've seen him look very strong in the fights that he's had with other opponents, so we expect a difficult fight, a hard fight, but I'm now used to those types of fights, so what's left from me on my end is for me to prepare myself well, come into the fight strong, not to lose speed because going up in weight may reduce speed, in the legs, and so we're going to do specific exercises by way of doctors who are going to tell us how we have to gain weight and in what way, without losing speed.

Announcer Dude: Now Juan Manuel, you did it against Floyd Mayweather Jr, and that picture may have stayed in the minds of the people, remembering "it didn't go well for Juan Manuel against Mayweather-

JMM: No no, it went badly for me.

Announcer Dude: "-in the welterweight division." You suffered a lot against the style of the North-American, but there's also the fact that Mayweather is completely the opposite if Pacquiao; he's not aggressive, he's defensive; I mean, different beings inside the ring. What do you have to say to the people, Juan Manuel, who fear seeing Juan Manuel Marquez at welterweight?

JMM: Look, what I could say is that I'm sure, and as are many people who know boxing and who watch the fights, that boxing is a question of styles, and when you have an opponent in front of you who doesn't want to fight, an opponent in front of you who is very defensive, an opponent in front of you who with one single jab is given the round, I think it's very difficult. We've always said that a fight takes two, and here Pacquiao presents a fight, and I present a fight, so I think the people will enjoy a great spectacle. So I think that I should tell the people to expect a great spectacle, to expect the best from me, as I'm going to prepare myself well as I've always done, and here in this fight with the help of doctors, we're going to work well because we want to win this fight we have before us.

Faitelson: Now the fight with Mosley, the latest exhibition Pacquiao gave against Mosley, was very unpleasant for the people that saw the fight.

JMM: Yes.

Faitelson: I think that you have earned the recognition, Juanma, over the course of 24 rounds with Pacquiao, that you are competitive, and that you can continue to be competitive.

JMM: That's right, that's right David. I think that we're very motivated in going after this fight, because we like to compete, we like to fight, and so I think that people are aware that we like to do that. So two fights that I've had with Manny Pacquiao, that have been very, very- decisions somewhat controversial, and well, now we're going to see what happens in this third fight, and the public knows I like to die in the ring.

Announcer Dude: Well the topic has a lot to consider, we're going to continue elaborating with Juan Manuel Marquez because there are a lot of questioners on the subject, BUT- let's go to our friend Jaime Motta who had the opportunity to talk with Freddie Roach and Bob Arum; why they picked Marquez, and see for yourself the nervousness in the words of Freddie Roach.

Motta: After making himself a free agent in order to get the fight he wanted, which he had been waiting for for three years, Juan Manuel Marquez, this November, will confront Manny Pacquiao. When the announcement was made, Bob Arume talked to us about what he thought of this fight, as well as the trainer of Manny Pacquiao, who says he's somewhat worried for what could occur in the ring.

Floyd boxed even more defensively than usual throughout the fight, you must admit, until about the tenth when he started really laying it on. Didn't help a sluggish JMM get off one bit. I think he just meant he didn't want to engage, and was content to pot-shot rather than fight- a concept alien to the JMM of the last 8 years.
