From Rafael: Shannon Briggs displayed enormous heart during his lopsided loss to heavyweight titlist Vitali Klitschko on Saturday, and it landed him in the hospital.

Klitschko hit the former two-time titleholder repeatedly with flush right hands almost at will throughout his title-retaining shutout decision in Hamburg, but Briggs would not go down.

Now, he is in Hamburg's Eppendorf University Hospital with a broken left orbital bone in his face, a broken nose and a torn left biceps, Empire Sports and Entertainment promoter Greg Cohen told ESPN.com.

"He was banged up pretty bad," Cohen said, shortly after arriving back in New York on Sunday. "The CT scan came back normal, thank God. Shannon wants to get out of there as soon as possible, but he'll be there for a little bit longer. He's devastated. He really thought he was going to win."

Cohen said the biceps injury was the most severe.

"His biceps is a very serious injury and they have to do surgery, and he'll probably be there for a week," Cohen said. "It might require more than one surgery."

Cohen said rumors that Briggs, 38, had suffered a brain hemorrhage were not true and that he was resting at the hospital and had even joked around with him before he left Germany.

"I wouldn't be here [in New York] if he wasn't OK," Cohen said. "He was in intensive care after the fight for precautionary reasons. The injuries are not life-threatening. He's just banged up, but it's not life-threatening or very serious. Other than the injuries I described, everything else is OK.

"He walked out of the arena on his own. They wanted to put him on as stretcher, but he wouldn't let them. He's going to be fine."

Klitschko, 39, dominated all 12 rounds, but after about the seventh round the fight became a brutal beatdown. Klitschko (41-2, 38 KOs), with the best knockout percentage in heavyweight title history, continued to pound Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KOs), but neither the referee, Ian John Lewis, nor Briggs' trainers, Herman Caicedo and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, stopped the fight.

    Cohen wishes they would have.

"He trained for this. He was 100 percent ready mentally and physically, but I wish they would have stopped it around the eighth round," Cohen said. "I love Shannon. He's like family to me. As a human being, he is much more important to me than as an athlete. So it was tough to watch. But Shannon did not want them stopping this fight. I wish they didn't listen to him, but I understand. I spoke to his corner after one of the rounds and Shannon was telling him, 'I'm OK, I'm going to get him.' Even after the 11th round, he thought he was still going to do it. His will was never broken. If I was in the corner, I would have stopped it. But I'm the promoter, not the cornerman.

"I don't blame the referee at all. The referee did a good job. And I don't blame the corner. I understand, but my preference would have been for it to be stopped."

What the hell they were thinking? Briggs took huge punishment for 9 rounds then Vitali unleashed one of the most brutal 3 minutes you'll ever see in R10, but neither the corner who's personally, nor the ref who's professionally responsible for the fighter's health did anything to stop this beatdown.

    Shame on them!

Shannon's heart was too big and his chin was too solid for his own good, and in R12 he took another hellatious beating, yet they still let the fight to go on. Briggs maybe deserved to see the scorecards vs. the highest KO ratio HW champ in history, but he's in hospital for his courageousness and might pay a very high prize in long-term effects. This was simply unnecessary punishment at it's worst, and I don't think th corner and the ref are qualified for their job, because they didn't look for the fighter's health and that's unforgivable in this brutal sport.

According to reporst, Briggs is hospitalized and is in intensive care because as he suffered a concussion and showed neurological abnormalities. He's in the ICU until CT scan and other tests clear him from brain damage. He also suffered some sort of eye-injuries.

I wish Shannon the very best, also, I hope he retires for good, with the ref and his corner.

The referee and doctor are the one to blame here. The corner cannot be relied on because in the end they from part of a fighters' corner and can never be as neutral as a ref or doc should be. Ref's and doctors should take decisions FOR the corner and fighter in case it shows they can't.

Hope they get sued and convicted in case something bad happens to Briggs.

Briggs corner is a bunch of complete idiots. They kept yelling at him "Work it Shannon work it" when he was already unable to throw a single punch and just kept getting hit with one freight train of a hammer after another. They should have taken him out after the 7th.

In the old times, refs would commit suicide out of regret for mistakes like this.

Refs these days would think nothing of it and believe they did nothing wrong.

Only the referee can stop the fight in Germany, but of course the corner could've and should've thrown in the towel, they are equally responsible for the fighter and not being neutral is no excuse whatsoever. If fact, unlike the ref who's just appointed to the job (which he didn't do properly), the corner of all people should look for Shannon's best interest, and they failed bigtime. The doctor said he would've stopped the fight if he could, but it was up to the ref.

His corner is also responsible, and they were utter morons troughout the fight. All shouting different instructions during rounds while Briggs was getting punished, and screaming like idiots when he landed a bodyshot or something.
I can understand if they want to pep up their man after some rounds, giving him confidence he still has a shot. But when Briggs almost collapsed in his corner after 10 any sane person would have pulled the plug.

Hope he gets well soon, without permanent damage!

edit: BigBone said almost the same thing.

It was terrible to watch, I felt sorry for Briggs, felt like screaming 'Stop the fight!' like Angelo Dundee when Frazier was getting crushed by Foreman.

I don't know what the **** they were all thinking.

    Best wishes to Shannon.

was saying since round 9 that the corner should look to stop this fight...Briggs was talking in the corner and did hear his corner talk about calling the fight to a halt. But nobody did it

I hear you BB and Rob.
Briggs corner was utter garbage and they should be ridiculed for their (non-)actions. But the ref cannot wait for the corner to stop the fight:deal
One of the most important functions and duties the ref has is to stop a fight when a fighters' health in is danger. That's a written down/ codified rule of his profession!

And neutrality IS a factor imo BB. What if Briggs asked his corner to promise him to not stop the fight if he doesn't go down?
